vmfs partition

Hello,

I recently installed ESX 3.0.2 I created the following partitions:

  • /boot 0256 MB

  • SWAP 2048 MB

  • / 20480 MB (20 GB)

  • /var/log 4096 MB

  • /opt 4096 MB

  • /tmp 4096 MB

  • vmcore 100 MB

I left 34 gigs of free space. When the install finished i noticed that my free space was gone and there is a partition called:

/vmfs/devices

What is /vmfs/devices ?

What happened to my free space?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tim

If you had modified the recommended partitions during the install and did not remove the VMFS partition - its parameter is set format all remaining space on the drive to be a VNFS partition -

i did remove the defaults. Is the file system ext3 or vmfs are they mutually exculsive. My total drive space is 68 gig so I don't understand why it shows up as /vmfs/devices.

/vmfs/devices represent disk device information on your system. If you create a VMFS volume for VMs (Add Storage) it will show up under /vmfs/volumes and is usable from there.

I have never had a need to directly access /vmfs/devices.

try the command vdf from the command line to give a true listing of your storage partitions.

Did you do fresh install? Did you do advance partition or default partition? If you do advance, when you completed your ext3, swap, vmkcore, etc...the rest of the space is going to be VMFS and make sure to check "fill maximum" disk left. You can check the disks info with vdf or fdisk -l just to see what partitions you have. Worst, case is reinstall fresh ESX clean and only takes 10 minutes rather than call tech support or posting. Make sure verify your partitions summary page before continue.
