Greater Efficiencies -- three times more efficient than other server virtualization products

Ooch ! That has got to hurt !!!

Personally I don't see how you could run 3 times more efficient than ESX; that would mean the sum of resources is much greater than the resources physically available. And that is (still Smiley Wink ) not possible. I think they mean running Oracle on a virtualisation platform... But using their "virtualisation" would limit the useability purely to Oracle. So basically it is not directly comparable to other virtualisation platforms I think...

"Personally I don't see how you could run 3 times more efficient than ESX"

Hmmm .... unless of course the Xen architecture provides for this ?

Of course it says "3 times more than other". It doesn't say 3 times more efficient than ALL other products. This just means that it's 3x faster than some software somewhere in some situation. It could be 3x faster than virtual server running on a 800 Mhz PIII. It could also be 3x slower than ESX and still make the same claim.

97% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Competition is a good thing. I'd love for ESX to go faster and this is part of the impetus to do so.

Yeah, it could mean all those things ......

Several points are raised though

  1. Oracle, the 2nd largest software vendor (by value?) has (slowly) woken-up to the demand and benefits of virtualisation

  2. It chooses, not VMWare, but Xen as its recommended and supported platform of choice

  3. This platform gives * 3 efficiencies over "something or other" and near native performance using the Oracle product suit

Welcome to the competition ...... its here.

a paravirtualised Linux guest running on XEN is better performing that the equalivelant Linux guest running under ESX fact, however other guests are not as efficient and performance is actually less then ESX as XEN is similar to VMware Server running under linux, for all other non paravitrualised guest.

But using their "virtualisation" would limit the useability purely to Oracle. So basically it is not directly comparable to other virtualisation platforms I think...

the release states that the useage is not just for Oracle guests but will support other OSes and Guests.

All x86 OS are to be shipped "enlightened", that is, paraV-ready.

Combine this with processor VT extensions and you have the competition some wish for.

Can anyone direct me to a link on this site that would tell me if I could move to vmware with the following support combination:

Windows 2000

Oracle 9.2.0.6

PeopleTools 8.45

I know this won't work using Oracle VM, but was wondering if I could move ahead based on a support doc found on this site. Thanks.

I've seen people virtualized their Oracle 10g in production without any problems. If you have to virtualize your 11g than Oracle will not support it for you so becareful which version to virtualize. Here's the link for details

I would like to get some benchmark on Oracle VM they talking about "3 times efficiently" but didn't specify ESX on the chart? If anyone has the luxury to test the product, please post for knowledge sake!
