The installation instructions are contained in the README file within the tgz file that you download.
I'm not too sure there's a specific page anywhere for the actual agent installation.
You start from the download e.g. http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27853.html which has instructions for unpacking the file and then where to go from there. The problem with this as a link is that it's only valid for this release of the agents.
be carefull we have encountered some problem with HP insight management.(7.6.0 and 7.8.0)
ESX server lost connection with VCS and a restart of vpxa service and mgmt service cannot resolve the problem, we needed to reboot esx server.
Check all information before installing.
To install the HPASM agents.... Once the file is on your ESX server.
tar -xzf hpmgmt-7.8.0-vmware3x.tgz
If you want help using the --help option
If you are upgrading use the --uninstall option to first uninstall your old agents then the --install option to install the new agents.
The script should include everything you want. These instructions will also work for 7.9.0 of the agents.

HP agents 7.7.0, 7.8.0 and 7.9.0 all have some real issues with VMware ESX OS. OpenIPMI driver install is incomplete and reports failed configuration in the logs but not to the installation script so you may not see the issue until you stop/start the agents or shutdown/reboot. HP has know about this issue for a long time but has been very slow to react. Given that some of the newest HP blades and G5 class servers must use OpeIPMI method based agents, this is not good, at all.
Hi, I am just about to move from HP agent version 7.6b to 7.8 on ESX 2.5.4. I assume I have to uninstall the previous version first, and that the uninstall no longer uninstalls the whole snmp?
After reading the post I am a bit wary, as I am installing this on a standalone ESX host, which, while being a Test environment, cannot really be resarted due to the amount of VMs and its use during the day.
Has anyone had any decent experiences with this upgrade?!
ESX will not need a restart for the agent upgrade.
It's quite a while since I did it, but the upgrade should remove the previous version.
The main thing you're likely to break is the HP Agents, not ESX itself, so the risk is low.
You should also read the README.txt file and try pre-configuring the hpmgmt.conf file and using the silent install as it suggests.
Mixed results for us. We found that uninstalling the old version avoids issues that some times popup. Sometimes, once in a while the rpm database gets confused and the HP install script will say something is not uninstalled that that really is. Above all, be cautious. I would not update the agents on any ESX host with any live VMs, just as a best practice approach.
The latest version seems to be v7.9.1 (11 Dec 2007) hpmgmt-7.9.1-vmware3x.tgz
and "Support has been added for VMware ESX Server 3.5.0."
Sorry guys, been meaning to update this thread. We have found ANOTHER issue with 7.9.1 that HP is trying to resolve actively. The HP IML is not being updated correctly under 7.9.x agents. Some events to not clear, or revert, for example NIC state - say link down, if you fix the issue, then it shows green for link up in IML, but click the refresh button a few times, it show RED, but the NIC sub agent says the Link is Up, and it you physically check the port, it is up. We have reproduced this on several servers, both rackables and blades, different makes and models.
If the IML is wrong, the when you run hplog -v you get bad information. Also, we have found SOME events are never reported to the IML now. For example, if you break a RAID 1 set, by pulling a drive, the /var/log/messages log from cma* process reports the issue, but the drive event is never logged in IML. We have also reported this to HP.
After two hours with HP, on a new issue (for us) with 7.9.0 and 7.9.1, we got the wonderful System Management Home Page timeout issue. The fix for us, was to just execute...

When it happens. Doing the typical...
service hpasm stop
service snmpd stop
service snmpd start
service hpasm start
Which is what HP told us to do, at least two or three times until the problem is gone, did not work, but running...
service snmpd restart
Alone worked 9 times straight on 9 different servers (this case DL580G5). We figure every time we reboot ESX we need to check for the timeout issue. At least until HP figures this one out, maybe in 8.0.0 agents?
Folks, has anyone managed to fix this issue???? Its driving me nuts.
When I install my HP Agents (either 7.9.0, 7.9.1 or 8.0.0) the SMH is blank. I use a scripted install but it looks like it fails as the SMH screen is blank.

Not sure. I ran into the same problem. So I changed my method instead. Rather than use the install script, I just copy in a good snmpd.conf file.
#Install HP Insight Management Agents 7.9.1:
#Paste the following into PuTTY:
mv -f /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf.old
scp email@example.com:/vmfs/volumes/WOC_ESX2_ADMIN/hpim791/snmpd.conf /etc/snmp
#enter password then paste below
scp firstname.lastname@example.org:/vmfs/volumes/WOC_ESX2_ADMIN/hpim791/hpmgmt-7.9.1-vmware3x.tgz /tmp
Enter password then paste below:
tar -xzvf hpmgmt-7.9.1-vmware3x.tgz
#Type "y" for every response. Type "Y" for use an existing snmpd.conf and then "n" for the next one.
Anyway, although manual, it is still so much quicker than running through the entire setup. Also, you don't have to enter a password if you download the files from a website. I just didn't bother getting that part set up. This is part of an install script that I found on the forums and it has made my ESX installs so much quicker.
