A shot in the dark - there's been some posts recently regarding FixCamera.exe causing problems with installing and running VMware - don't suppose you've got a similar issue?

If you create both keys in the registery and add "full control" rights to SYSTEM and yourself, it will work.

In HKLM\SOFTWARE create "VMware, Inc." then create "VMware Workstation".
