VM guest on ESX 3.0.2 connected on a MSA1510 iscsi SAN.

Hardware: IBM X3655 12 Gigs RAM, HP MSA1510 Iscsi SAN (2 lun x 400 gigs ). 5X 146.8 SCSI 10K.

i have 1 guest ( windows xp ) with HD tach 3.0.4.0 to bench the disk performance of my iscsi san.

i got an average of 26 MB/sec and burst of 40.8 MB/s. Im using Esx Iscsi software adapter.

Is this result normal? or im supposed to get more disk performance ?

The iscsi traffic is on a dedicated VLAN connected on a 6509 Cisco switch.

bye

I'm haven't use HD tach, so I'm not familiar with the settings, but disk performance will be impacted by the type of I/O proflie you're using. For example, 100 % sequential reads will be very fast compared to 100% random writes. But overall 26 MB / sec is pretty good. You might also want to try it with Windows 2003 or Linux as XP doesn't perform as well. Below is a thread to check out. It uses iometer but with the same methodology you'll be able to better compare your performance with what others have recorded.
