Fusion 1.1 RC and the new Santa Rosa MacBook (Intel GMA X3100) laptops

Just wanted to let folks know that the brand new Santa Rosa MacBook with the Intel GMA X3100 graphics chipset is out, and I wanted to report that VMware Fusion 1.1 RC works quite well with it. They're speedy little things, and very cute!

Right now, there's an issue with 1.1 RC where Fusion displays an error if you enable 3D in your virtual machine and try to run it on the new MacBook. We have fixed this internally, and plan to have it available in the next release.

If you're curious about the details, Fusion's 3D support requires OpenGL 1.4 or higher, but the Intel GMA X3100 driver shipped with Leopard only reports that it supports OpenGL 1.2. This means that Fusion disables 3D support too aggressively. (The GMA 950 driver does the same thing, but we had a workaround that specifically allowed 3D to be used with a warning with that driver.)

Anyway, stay tuned for more fixes!

Ben
