Ubuntu 7.10 and Tools

Hello. Prior to Leopard I upgraded (not a new install or VM -- just an upgrade) my previous Ubuntu to 7.10 - no problems. However, I did not update Tools as I wanted to install Leopard first. I did get Leopard working with the assistance of this forum - many thanks. Now I need to turn my sites to upgrading Tools in 7.10; however, before I do this I thought I read some where that installing Tools may cause some problems (mouse, kb????, etc.).

Has anyone successfully updated Tools in 7.10 and if so how is it going and more importantly what specific steps did you take. Thanks.

The problems I noticed were lack of scroll wheel (workaround is to edit xorg.conf) and subtle mouse weirdness (no workaround I know of).

Thanks etung: wondering if maybe i should just leave the update alone for awhile? everything appears to be working just fine right now, other than the message to update tools. any thoughts on running it as is without the update? also, would you happen to know (or have a link) as to what updating tools in the future. for some reason, i can not find my previous help file on this -- must be getting old. now that is not really right -- i am getting old!!

Updating the Tools in Gutsy is no problem. Choose Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools, the Tools CD should mount on the desktop. In Applications > Accessories > Terminal, I sudo to root, then in /tmp extract /media/cdrom/VMwareTools-7.6.1-61385.tar.gz. After extracting, I cd into vmware-tools-distrib and run ./vmware-install.pl
