VMWare player

Hello,

I've recently installed workstation 6 on a Vista platform and created 3 virtual machines(2 windows XP & a Linux 5).

Using the VMWare player I'm trying to access the virtual machines but I'm getting the following error:-

'Error while powering on: Check for missing files failed: Insufficient permission to access file.'

I've set the permission to allow VMWare player user to access the virtual machine file but still get the same error message.

Can anyone throw some light on this and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks!

What permissions did you give it? read? read + execute? read + write +execute? check the vmx for any paths like redo logs etc. Check your temp directory too.

The windows installer service is already started is probably the clue, it thinks something is still installing ...

Look for processes of msiexec in task manager.

Because of Vista's new security, what you'll need to do is right-click on the folder containing the vmware session files and choose PROPERTIES. make sure the folder is not marked READ ONLY. If it is, uncheck this.

Then click the SECURITY tab. Click the EDIT button (to change permissions). click on each user in the list and make sure they have FULL CONTROL. if any user does not have FULL CONTROL permissions, click the check box for FULL CONTROL below, then click APPLY. repeat for each user in the list. You will be asked to confirm this change several times (Vista is very annoying that way)

Now, go into the folder that contains the vmware session files. repeat the steps above for each file in the session's folder (usually 5 to 15 files).

that WILL do the trick.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the tip! I'm new to Vista and your reply was a great help.
Note, another symptom is that you can't edit the VM settings. I have WS6 installed on Vista and the memory size etc were grayed out.
Thanks,
Scott
