AVG and Unity Possible Issue

Hi - this has happened a few times and I would like to see if anyone else has had this issue. I have AVG 7.5 installed under Fusion. Today it remined me I needed to run my bi-weekly test and I said go ahead. Well I then tried to open Xcel in a Window (not Unity) and it took like 25 seconds to open. After it was open, I clicked on the Unity button to run the program in Unity. Excel did not display. I ended up clicking on View option and noticed that "Single Window (Exit Unity)" was greyed out. I clicked on this option to see what would happen - well Excel opened just fine under Unity. So I went back to View and verified Unity was checked and greyed out - it was. Next I clicked on View and selected "Single Window (Exit Unity)" - no problem exiting Unity and having Excel show in a Window. Next I clicked again on the Unity button and everything opened just fine and quickly in Unity. Note: all this time AVG was running its test update.

Seems like there is some type of timing delay and would like to know if anyone else has seen this with AVG or any other virus program they have.

I can tell you one of my physical PCs (3.0 GHz Xeon) comes to a crawl whenever (a big name) AV is scanning it. I can't imagine letting that thing run in a VM while I'm using it. If this is the only case where switching to Unity is delayed or slowed, I would schedule switching around your AVG runs.

Well I have to agree. Just goes to show how much you appreciate a Mac.

Sounds like you need a more proactive solution for protection. AV signatures are so reactive on when an AV company decides to create a signature.

So far I've only come across one proactive solution and it seems listeners of Security Now really like it too. The product is called Blink from eEye Digital Security. I run it on all my VMs and havent noticed a slow down yet.

Proactive! Good point. Will check Blink out - thanks for the feedback BP9906.
