Very slow transfers over SAMBA after upgrade to 3.0.2 build-52542

Hello,

Has anyone noticed any problems with samba after upgrading to 3.0.2?

We’ve observed that our backups take forever after upgrading to 3.0.2. We are using vcbmounter command in the service console to transfer snapshots to samba share on Windows server. Before upgrade, 20GB VM took 2 hours to complete, now it’s 20 hours or more.

I think the problem is related to samba client in ESX console. I tried shares on different Windows servers and the problem is the same. To rule out vcbmounter I tried to just copy file to a share. It takes 10 minutes to copy 50MB file!

The problem occurs across all 3 ESX servers in our env.

I thought that it might be something to do with network card/drivers etc. but tried scp copy to the service console and speed was fine. I tried with both e1000 and tg3 network cards.

Is anyone experiencing similar problem?

Any news about this issue? We've the same problem with SMB mounts in our four recently installed 3.0.2 servers.

I am having the same problems. We have our ESX server which is connected directly from it's 2nd NIC to the NIC on a file server (found this was a perfect solution for speed). We run vcbmounter for all of our vm's overnight to get a backup of each machine per night. Previously before the upgrade to 3.0.2 the whole process (for 5 VM's) took 3-4 hours (starts at midnight). I got in this morning and it was only just starting on the 3rd machine (9.5 hours to do not even 50%!!).

We have purchased ESX through IBM so I have logged a call with them and they will get back to me. I will post anything here as soon as I know.

Hi There

ESX Server 3.0.2, Patch ESX-1002089; Support for NetApp-specific OpCode; Latent Ping Response; VMkernel Updates

Fixes an issue of slow ping response from the service console. The slow response has been observed to fluctuate depending on the network load. The response time might go down after a series of pings or during a high load of data transfer. After upgrading from ESX Server 3.0.1 to ESX Server 3.0.2, the ping response ranges from approximately 10ms down to 1ms. This fix restores the response time for ping packets to the normal range.

Ths should solve the problem for you and it was released 8th October 2007...

I just installed the new patches (including ESX-1002089).

This does indeed solve the ping problem.

Samba also seems better, but i'm still testing.
