VMware ESX configuration, cost problems spur users switch to Microsoft Virtual Server[/url]
...Ad replication inside of VMware has always had issues...which affects Exchange and Active directory...a bunch of work-arounds for the known issues with the RPC issues...
I haven't personally seen any RPC issues, but I would still like to know what "known issues" he's talking about....anybody have any ideas?
Or should I stop believing everything I read at searchservervirtualization.com...lol.

Hello,
We have a number of test domains with various Microsoft products including SQL and Exchange and have not experienced any real problems. We have come across one issue when setting up a trust from a DC virtual machine that we were able to resolve, each time, by disabling Shared Folders on the vm.
"I found the issues during a prototyping exercise with Microsoft and some black belts a few years ago.
Wonder what would happen if they tried to reproduce the problems now, on current rev product?
I wonder how much research the author did or if he just focused on one users opinions and problems. He also said he found RPC errors years ago, that was a totally different ESX product back then. I've never had problems running AD on ESX, I'm sure other users could tell you the same thing.
>>"Quigley finds using Virtual Server simple and straightforward and gets plenty of documentation on configuration and tuning from Microsoft."
Of course, it's a simple product without many of the features and functionality of ESX.
>>"Quigley says hes pleased with Microsoft products overall, particularly the performance and troubleshooting capabilities of Microsoft A AD/Exchange/SQL performance and troubleshooting"
Sounds like the person he interviewed is a big fan of Microsoft products and is probably biased towards MSVS.
>>"Is anyone out there sharing John Quigleys experiences with ESX configuration and cost problems or having no problems with those issues at all? "
Further proof he focused on one users experience and did not do enough research.
I quit reading the searchservervirtualization.com blogs a while ago, they never did seem to have any great information and are mostly opinions.
I've run AD on ESX 2.x and above without issues, that's why I was surprised to see it described as "known issues".
More actual debate going on here:

Well, that thread is more about VI3 vs Viridian in general (and they're a bit off on a few of the details). Amusing, though.
I had my own take on this SSV article over on this thread:

I think the gentleman in question certainly doesn't have his technical details straight. I also think it's kind of a funny premise in the first place -- "Is anybody at all using MSVS for real work? Anybody? Bueler? Ferris Bueler? Anybody?" "
good stuff
Well, I'm having such RPC issues but couldn't find much in here.
3 different VMWare Server 1.0.3 setups. Two of them have RPC issues between the host and guests. Guests are Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server and a 2003 PDC.
If someone has any lead to fixing the issue it would be appreciated. And no, I would never move to MS solution as there is a main difference between MS and VMWare. One takes the virtual technology really seriously and the other not.
jcasares, I suggest you open a new thread in the vmware server forum with a complete desc of your problem (how to reproduce it) , your hardware details, host config, vm config etc....
