Gentlemen,
I checked the "accelerate 3D graphics" option, a warning saying that VM's OpenGL can only supports DirectX 8.1" appeard and, after POST, a new window saying that 3D graphics couldn't be opened.
Anyone know why? The Fusion official release will support it?
PS: My Windows XP Pro VM is running DirectX 9.0c version...
Regards,
Alex
Ok, one by one:
1. Yes, I tried to run my game, nothing happens, only a gray window without content. When booting an alert disabling 3D acceleration appeared. I have a Mac mini.
2. Parallels runs perfectly DX9?
3. Like "rhind" said: DX9 and OpenGL are required features! I won't install Boot Camp simply because VM uses disk space on demand and it is possible to run Windows together with MacOS, or better, inside it!
4. Which "release candidate"? Where can I find it? I have the pre-release license...

With Beta 4/4.1 support for 3D was disabled due to the limitations of the underlying graphics chip driver. This has been reverted with Release Candidate 1. So, you may try it again.

No they don't.

VMware Fusion 1.0 Release Candidate (build 50460) Now Available![/url]
Ciao, Andreas
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, now you explained it to me!!!
The 3D was removed from beta for onboard GPUs!!!
With this new RC may work!!!
Thanks, Andreas... Finally... 😃
We will support DirectX 8.1 for VMware Fusion 1.0
Just for Windows XP?
Any word when/if DirectX 8.1 will be supported in Vista virtual machines?
I understand that graphics acceleration is experimental at the moment.
It is a bit disappointing* to see it working in older versions of Windows but not in the most recent of Microsoft's offerings.
Or would that be prohibitively difficult to implement for Vista machines within a reasonable time frame for Fusion 1.0 release?
(I don't know much about Windows internals but I have read/heard MS has changed their "display driver model")
EDIT:
\* I do, of course, understand, that there might be more important things to improve and focus on prior to the 1.0 release. And maybe it is more difficult than I can imagine... but I assumed implementing DirectX support in Vista is rather a matter of emulating graphics hardware in software, than writing drivers for the VM OS... at least, since you can install older non-WDDM drivers in Vista (...I think..?)
To sum it up, I would be perfectly happy if it came as a \*free* upgrade some time after the 1.0 release. I would also consider an upgrade fee for OpenGL/DX9 support to be "fair enough".
However, given that VMware intents to support DX8.1 in Fusion 1.0 (see quote above), I would be disappointed with Vista support not being at least on par with (the older) XP. Especially, since I just bought a Vista license, and do not have a license for XP.
My guess for it working in XP first rather than vista is:
a) XP has a much wider user base than Vista at the moment (I'd guess, haven't actually met anyone who runs Vista yet even if buying new machines PC machines)
b) Vista requires DX9 which I guess has quite a bit more functionality than DX8/8.1 so is harder to implement
c) And as I guess DX9 is a superset of DX8 then when they've implemented DX8 and are happy with it, it will be a stepping stone to getting DX9 supported.
Cheers
Russell
