Feature Poll - Your wishlist for Fusion 1.x

RC1 may be considered "feature complete", but there are still features many of us are hoping can be implemented -

my wishlist -

OpenGL support[/b] (pretty pretty please)

multiple snapshots with snapshot manager

ability to automatically remount boot camp partition after use

\-----

What's on your wishlist?

Only 3 things:

- Ability to limit Applications/Launch menu to a small list of applications that I want windows installed for (the rest is clutter); I consider this more of a cleanup item.

- Cisco VPN and VMware to play nice (i.e. if VMware is running, then Cisco VPN will not work) - this item probably needs Cisco's co-operation; I also consider this more of clean-up.

- Make sure that the implementation is "perfectly" stable (most important).

Since VMF is now feature complete, you simply can't[/b] ask for new features for version 1.0. Open GL support (with as many pretties as you like), multiple snapshots, etc., are new features. Therefore, the earliest they can appear would be in version 1.1, 2.0 or something like that, not in 1.0.

The only thing we can request is that a number of minor bugs (like, for instance, certain glitches in Windows windows in Unity \[at least for Vista]), be tackled with as best as the developing team can within a limited time frame. I'm sure they are working on that toward RC2 and GA and we'll still see some improvement, but it won't be breathtaking. That's in the past. If you want new thrills, you'll have to wait until at least 1.1.

Regards.

I wish for only 1 thing:

VMWare sticks to their quality guns and doesn't add any new features until post 1.0 release.

Here's what I'd like to see fixed:

\* Suspended VMs retain state (fullscreen/windowed/Unity) and size upon resume

\* VMs retain size/state (fullscreen/window/Unity) through system sleep

*Misc. Unity fixes (i.e. exclude the Dock from the Unity desktop space, fix graphical glitches, etc)

\* Eject button works like all other Mac OS shortcuts now do

RC1 is just that, a candidate[/i] for release. This doesn't mean we should stop discussing features that have been on the table since Beta 1.

If VMware wants to create a product that can compete with Parallels Desktop, they should greatly value this sort of input from their present and prospective customers. My feature poll theads provide such input.

Ditto. All I really need now is for VMware Tools to actually be installable within Solaris Express/OpenSolaris, Solaris Express Developer Edition, OpenBSD 4.x, and FreeBSD 6.x so that I can utilize the shared path with the native OS X host.

Presently all attempts to install VMware Tools in the above OSs fails.

I'd really like to see VMs display a representation of onscreen visuals when suspended. It seems to show something like that when you're resuming, but it would be nice to see the same image when the VM is loaded and idle. It's a polish thing Smiley Wink

Yes, you can indeed ask for the moon, but, if I understand VMware correctly, they won't be bringing it down to you. I know most of our requests have been reiterated right since the first beta, but asking is not the same as granting or achieving. VMware has decided that WMF 1.0 is now feature complete and I believe it is.

I suggest that you change your thread name. Your requests are NOT for RC2, nor for WMF 1.0. They are for WMF 1.x (x # 0) or for WMF 2.x. And that's that.

EMR is correct - you shouldn't expect major changes between a release candidate and the release version (otherwise, well, it wouldn't be a candidate for release[/i]...) - changes are typically limited to super-critical bugs that people discover.

aanhorn, you're also right, there's no reason to stop discussing features you want (although "on the table" suggests that VMware put them there or that they're realistic, when no statements either way have been made). We definitely value your input and take it into consideration.

Allow the Applications Launch window to accept directory paths. For example, I'd love to be able to type "c:\dev" in the launch window and have it open a new Explorer window at that location.

Also, fix the high CPU usage when you have a USB device connected.

Cisco VPN is working fine here with Fusion running. I'm using the OS X version of it (4.9.00 0050) and with NAT in Windows it finds the corporate network perfectly. I had to manually add the corporate DNS name servers to Windows but it works great otherwise.

I would like to see an added option where you can hide the Virtual Machine Library dialog box in Unity mode please.

Hmmm - as I am now learning - there are a few bits missing out of Fusion compared to Workstation ...

1) Virtual Network Manager

2) option complete version of the CLI vdisk-manager tool .... note that the -k option is missing so you can't shrink the vmdk.....

I could really do with both .....

Just want to point out that Fusion != Workstation, as reflected in price, target market, and features.

I do see your point, the thread name is a little unrealistic seeing as the features are pretty fixed at this point, at least for 1.0

Still, as a paying customer, I'm a tad disappointed that OpenGL didn't make it into Fusion yet.

Not disappointed enough to jump ship to Parallels, of course ; I have faith the Fusion development will continue to be brisk following 1.0, if the excellent and timely work of the VMware guys so far is any indication.

1. Stability

2. Stability

3. Stability

The last thing I want to see happen is for Fusion to chase the "Parallels Feature List". I've used Parallels for over a year on my Week 2 MacBook, I think it is a good program when it runs, I'm glad I bought it. But on my standard machine with a pretty standard XP VM, it only boots successfully two out of three times. The Parallels developers seem keener on adding new features rather than improving the stability of what they have. In my experience even though Fusion has yet to have a general release it is far more stable than Parallels v2.5. As such I've already pre-ordered.

Competition, don't you just love it...

1. Stability (of course)

2. When exiting VM Fusion, I would like to see both Suspend and Shutdown as options, rather then setting one as a preference and not having both options when exiting VM.

1. Graphics acceleration in Vista Guests

2. Localized versions.

At least Spanish, French, German and Japanese localization would be nice - and should be more appealing to customers (imagine it installed on a machine on display in a store or something). In the end, it might help in the marketplace, and it is really, really to do in OS X, from a development-wise...

3. At least a localization of the "Applications" launch menu (which launches applications from the Windows guest's start menu) would be great. I don't know if and how this is implemented in XP but in Vista folders can be localized, much like in OS X (at least from an end user user point of view). For example, the "Pictures" folder becomes "Bilder" and "Imágenes" in German and Spanish, repectively. And some actually are localized, which are also present in Vista's start menu.

Whereas my (German) version of Vista correctly displays

"Programme"

"Zubehör"

"Wartung"

...etc. in the start menu, Fusion's "Applications" launch menu uses the "hidden" english names:

"Programs"

"Accessories"

"Maintenance"

Not only does this confuse the user - it also screws up the alphpabetical order users are used to. That is, the order of folders displayed by Fusion is different than in the "real" Windows start menu - which is a bit annyoing.

4. Growl notifications!!!

As Apple apparently does not a make a move to incorporate some kind of this wonderful feature into OS X 10.5 (as they did with Widgets in 10.4, and also Coverflow in iTunes and iPhone), Growl is the de facto standard. Even some commercial apps like Skype and Transmit support it.

Now, it might be tricky to forward all kinds of Windows notifications (i.e. notifications from the guest system) to Growl, which I saw suggested on this forum some day...

But it would be neat, if VMware's front-end status messages would create Growl notifications. For example, when copying larger files/amounts of date from OS X' desktop to Windows desktop, you cannot do anything in your VM... you have to wait until transfer is completed. Also, the guest OS may go into suspend mode some time.

And taking snapshots usually takes quite a while.

Things like this are quite often happening in the background - some "this and that process just completed" notification would come handy...

Just one of the little things making the Mac platform unique (and reason, why I love using a Mac - or Skype for that matter)
