Looking for DR setup advice.

We are currently using ESX 3.x, Infrastructuer, DRS ,HA etc. in our environment. We have our Hosts setup in clusters and the reliabilty has been great.

I am look for the best way to replicate this environment to a DR site we are setting up.

We have a Compellent SAN that we can sync vdisk to a SAN at our DR site which I thought would be and easy way to replicate our VMFS disks. The down side to that is we have some test servers that I don't need to replicate and they are on the same VMFS vdisks. To do this will require us to have at least the same amount of disk space on our DR SAN as our production SAN which we can't afford at this time.

Is there a way in VM to replicate or sync certain vm's to a VMFS that would be at a remote location?

Or any other ideas?

Thanks

Hello,

You can look at something like esxReplicator. With it you can selectively replicate virtual machines and there is no requirement for similar SAN hardware on both ends.

A solution we have tested with decent success (not implemented in production yet as we do not have an official DR site) is NSI Double-Take. There is a little additional set-up on the front end, but it does provide great failover. Double-Take basically replicates the source server at the byte level, real time to a target server. There are many replication options for this product (including live failover) and it can also be throttled by day and time to help manage bandwidth if necessary.

I'm not sure if this fits your requirements, but hopefully it helps.
