Shared folders are not supported in esx at all (both 2.x and 3.x), but you should deactivate them in ESX 3.x during vmware tools install. It's weird but, even if they are not used you won't be able to "DC Promo" your domain controller if they are installed.
Anyway, if you have 2.5.3 you are safe. Remember that when you will upgrade to 3.x.
okay thanks all for the information.
if i follow ur link esiebert i find the following statement of folker:
"The Shared folder is installed with VMware Tools, there is only one version
of VMware tools (for WS/GSX/ESX) in ESX there is no shared folder support.
If you install VMware tools you can do a custom settup and deselect the
Shared folder option."
then it should not make any difference if i install the tools with our without the "shared folder" option.
but i made the following experience:
\- if i try to promote a windows 2003 server to a domain controller without the "shared folder" option installed i get a "service error" message before loggin on to the server without an event log entry!
\- if i promote the same machine to a dc with "shared folder" option installed it works fine.
that is why i am not sure if it really does not matter if the "shared folder" is installed or not.
Here's some similar issues, looks like it might be quirk with 2003 and VMware tools...

It's best not to install it (choosing a Typical install of the VMware tools will exclude it). It can create problems with other MS funtionality like Terminal Services and roaming profiles. In this KB article there is a registry fix to remove shared folders.
