Hi,
I remember working with a guy who had vmware on a laptop which was set
up in a particular way. He was running Windows with a linux guest
machine. Somehow, he had the Linux apps running in such a way that
the appeared as windows on the Windows desktop. Put another way, the
linux apps appeared to be just another windows app on the desktop.
I've just installed the VMWare freebie server and can't figure out a
way to get the same type of configuration to work. Is that the proper
VMWare app to use, or is there another way to do this? I can't figure
out how it would be done with VMW server.
Thanks,
-Tennis
He probably not only used VMware but an X11 client on his Windows box too.
A free X11 implementation for Windows is available from Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/)
Tennis,
VMware isn't currently providing any such functionality that will give you this out of the box.
You can normally tell the cygwin X11 session from the other windows because it doesn't look quite like the other apps. I would guess he was using Xming for this task.
Parallels is a virtualization vendor providing similar functionality in their OSX product that will allow your windows apps to run as if they were OSX apps ("Parallels Coherence").
If your host os were linux and the guest were windows you could use SeamlessRDP/rdesktop1.5 to run your windows apps as if they were in the linux desktop.
Good luck!
Lars
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried using Cygwin's X-Win server and it crashes after a coupla hours. Grrrr...

Hi Tennis,
please reward the guys who helped you out if your problem was solved.
Cheers,
Jan
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the input so far, but it hasn't solved the problem. I've tried both cygwin and Xming. Both work ok for a few hours and then crash, taking my emacs session with it.
So far, there isn't any viable way to reliably keep a vmware-based x-win app up and running on my xp destkop for any period of time.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

Exceed from OpenText (used to be Hummingbird) is an X server for windows that lets you do such 'magic'. There are many ways of using Exceed and what you describe is one of them. Unfortunately, it is a commercial product and not inexpensive either...
Yeah, I was thinking of Exceed. But I don't have the $$ for that.
Oh well. Thanks anyway guys ....
No good solution found.
