Drag and Drop ... Maybe

This has happened to me a few times, but this time it was different:

I maintain a sparse image that I keep my work files in. Prior to beta 3 I never had a problem dragging a work folder ~350MB+ from my image to my XP-Pro Documents folder.

Over the last 3 days when I did this I received a message indicating such and such file could not be MOVED because it was in use. I could not and still can not figure out what is causing the problem, especially since I was COPYING and not MOVING a folder.

Today I said I'll copy the folder to my desktop and try it again. Received the exact same error. I then decided to copy the folder to my 4GB Gizmo and then I would remove and mount the Gizmo in XP.

Well I did the copy with no problem and said heck I will try the drag & drop one more time before I mount the Gizmo. Imagine my surprise when it worked!

I can not figure out why. Has anyone had this problem? Thanks.

I maintain a sparse image that I keep my work files in. Prior to beta 3 I never had a problem dragging a work folder ~350MB+ from my image to my XP-Pro Documents folder.

Is the sparse image on the host? How big is it? Where is it located? How much free space is there on the drive containing it?

I received a message indicating such and such file could not be MOVED because it was in use.

Where did you see this message? OS X? XP? Fusion?

I could not and still can not figure out what is causing the problem, especially since I was COPYING and not MOVING a folder.

IIRC, drag and drop is a two step process where the files are first copied to a temporary location, then moved to the final destination. Thus you need adequate space for both the copy (in the temporary location) and the final version.

I then decided to copy the folder to my 4GB Gizmo and then I would remove and mount the Gizmo in XP.

What's a Gizmo? A USB stick?

I will try the drag & drop one more time before I mount the Gizmo. Imagine my surprise when it worked!

So let's see if I understand what's going on:

1. You weren't able to DnD from a sparse image on OS X to XP (did you try from a non-sparse filesystem? to a different guest? etc.)

2. In an attempt to get around this, you copied the files to a USB stick, then unmounted it.

3. Without mounting the stick in the guest, you tried DnD again, which worked.

I have seen two other issues relative to drag and drop:

1) A couple of times my files didn't show up on the desktop. Were they copied? What happened? I was deliberate with my drag and drop action.

2) On Solaris (and possibly other unix OS, I have not checked) file transfers are limited to the amount of space allocated to /. I tried to drop a file into my home directory, but could not because even though I have > 9GB free in /export/home, VMWare was using a temp file and my / didn't have enough space.

ETUNG: REPLY TO YOUR PREVIOUS POST - THANKS.

Is the sparse image on the host? (YES) How big is it? (4.5GB – FREE SPACE IS 3.2GB)

Where did you see this (Move) message? OS X? XP? Fusion? (THE MESSAGE APPEARS AS A POP-UP WINDOW IN XP)

IIRC, drag and drop is a two step process where the files are first copied to a temporary location, then moved to the final destination. Thus you need adequate space for both the copy (in the temporary location) and the final version. (YES I AM AWARE OF THIS. XP WAS SET-UP WITH 30GB – PLENTY OF FREE SPACE AVAILABLE AND THE SPARSE IS AS NOTED ABOVE)

What's a Gizmo? A USB stick? (SORRY ABOUT THAT – YES IT IS A USB STICK)

So let's see if I understand what's going on:

1. You weren't able to DnD from a sparse image on OS X to XP (did you try from a non-sparse filesystem? To a different guest? etc.) (YES I TRIED THAT. THE FILE FOLDER WAS COPIED TO MY OS X DESKTOP AND THEN I DID A DnD TO XP AND RECEIVED THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE)

2. In an attempt to get around this, you copied the files to a USB stick, then unmounted it. (THAT IS CORRECT)

3. Without mounting the stick in the guest, you tried DnD again, which worked. (THAT IS ALSO CORRECT)

NOTE: I TRIED THE SAME DnD INTO PARALLELS WITH NO PROBLEMS WHAT-SO-EVER. I DID THIS FROM WITHIN MY SPARSE IMAGE LOCATED IN OS X AND FROM THE OS X DESKTOP. I FURTHER TRIED TWO OTHER LARGE FOLDERS AND BOTH COPIED WITHOUT A PROBLEM – FROM WITHIN THE SPARSE AND FROM THE DESKTOP OF OS X.

ALIASME:

I concur - I was very deliberate with my DnD. I was aware that sufficient space needed to be available for the process to complete. In fact, I made certain nothing else was happening (no downloads, no browser running, etc.) prior to the copy.

As I noted in my previous post - this has only started since beta 3.

One thing I did not mention is - I have never had this issue under Parallels. And I have had this program since it was first in beta.
