Sound with Windows Vista Ultimate (Beta)

I am having trouble getting sound in the above VM. When I go to the device manager, there is no reference to a sound device. What do I need to do to get sound to work in my VM?

Thank you.

You will also need to disable the Driver Signing check on Vista. When booting up the VM, click in the VM (so it will accept keyboard input), then mash on the F8 key a few times right when the Bios Post finished and the OS kicks in. This should bring up the Advanced Boot Options menu and choose the "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement". You will have to do this at every boot up until VMware releases a certified driver. This is a Vista specific "feature".

Now you should be able to install the driver normally through the Device Manager. It's been awhile since I did this, but the steps are something like Right click on the sound device, choose update driver, DO NOT let it search for the drivers, you need to choose the option that lets you pick a directory. Point it to the downloaded driver.

Let me know if that works.

Have you added a sound adapter to your VM's configuration?

If so, Vista should, at the very least, display an "unknown device" in Device Manager. The driver should be available on Windows Update.

Is this the x64 version of Windows Vista? The default New Virtual Machine wizard in Fusion doesn't add a sound device to XP x64 or Vista x64. As Rob says you have add the sound device to the configuration file manually. You may also need the 64-bit audio driver to get sound functioning.

Yes it is.

I checked another thread and added the following lines to a file I created (config.ini) in the vmware folder:

sound.present = "TRUE"

sound.fileName = "-1"

sound.autodetect = "TRUE"

After rebooting the VM, sound did not work and nothing showed up in the device manager either -- nothing under sound, other, or unknown.

The 32-bit version also has this line:

sound.virtualDev = "es1371"

Once you get the device recognized in the Device Manager, try installing this driver:

VMaudio Driver (experimental)

To play sound in virtual machines running 64-bit versions of Windows guest operating systems, you need to install the driver below. This driver is for the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP Pro guest operating systems running on VMware Workstation 5.5 or higher.

Version: 5.10.0.3500 | 12/29/2005 | 12 KB[/i]

Note:[/b] Workstation 6.0 may have a newer version of this driver\[nobr]

I moved the folder onto the Vista desktop, opened it and right-clicked on the INF file, choosing Install. After authorizing the install, the installation is aborted. It tells me that the INF I selected "does not support this method of installation"! What gives?

The problem for me is that the sound device does not show up (at all) in the device manager and therefore, I have nothing to update.
