Video quality :(

Is there some way to alter the video quality in the guest OS? I'm seeing all kinds of striping with Linux. I've uninstalled the VMware tools, and re-installed them, booted to init 3, ran the VMware config, rebooted to X, logged in. But it still looks like it's running with a limited palette.

Host: MacBook Pro, OS X 10.4.8

Guest OS: CentOS 4.4, all updates

Cinema HD:

Display Type: LCD

Resolution: 2560 x 1600

Depth: 16-bit Color

I wander if that is why you're seeing the banding and i'm not? The 16bit colour depth on your 2nd screen?

Here's my output - it shows the details for both my screens but shows they're both set to 32bit:

ATI Radeon X1600:

Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600

Type: Display

Bus: PCIe

VRAM (Total): 256 MB

Vendor: ATI (0x1002)

Device ID: 0x71c5

Revision ID: 0x0000

EFI Driver Version: 01.00.068

Displays:

iMac:

Display Type: LCD

Resolution: 1680 x 1050

Depth: 32-bit Color

Built-In: Yes

Core Image: Supported

Main Display: Yes

Mirror: Off

Online: Yes

Quartz Extreme: Supported

Q17 Digital:

Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz

Depth: 32-bit Color

Core Image: Supported

Mirror: Off

Online: Yes

Quartz Extreme: Supported

Rotation: Supported

From memory, i think I'd expect to see banding on a screen colour depth below 24bit. BUT like I say, I'm not knowledgeable in this area at all.

By the way, when i mentioned that i didn't think i could see banding, i meant on MY screen of MY virtual machine. I agree, I can see it very clearly on yours.

Hope it helps!

Martin.

This is really a guest OS configuration question. I don't know much about CentOS, but I know Ubuntu 6.10 looks wonderful.

Hmmm.... I'm glad there's hope. Smiley Happy

Everything but gradients look wonderful in CentOS, though I noticed the same problem with Windows XP, which I mentioned in another post for WinXP video problems that I've noticed. It looks like the colour depth isn't

I'm assuming that there's an issue with Fusion since these VMs look fine with Workstation 5.5 on Linux and WinXP as hosts. I've removed and re-installed the guest tools in both Linux and XP guests.

This is a follow-up in case any future searches turn this thread up.

Per other discissions, it looks like this is is a bug that appears only on a secondary display. (Mine is a 30" Apple Cinema display.) This has been reported as a bug with appropriate details.

For more information, see the following thread:

What graphics card is in the MBP that you're using?

I'm using a secondary monitor attached to my iMac which has an ATI x1600 with 256MB of graphics ram and while i'll admit that i'm no expert at these things i don't THINK i can see any banding in my virtual machines. In particular, OpenSUSE 10.2 with a desktop that is a two colour horizontal gradient and i don't think i can see the banding.

The secondary monitor is attached using Apples mini DVI -> standard DVI converter and using the DVI socket of the external monitor (a fairly cheap Hyundai Imagest Q17 BTW).

Just thought i'd mention it Smiley Happy

If you look at the window snapshots (see hyperlinks in my previous posts), the banding is very[/b] obvious.

The secondary monitor is attached using

Mine is attached by the standard DVI connector that comes with the MBP and the Apple Cinema display.

I have NO[/b] idea how that got changed.

I'm grovelling most humbly in the dirt for everybody's forgiveness for wasting everybody's time and effort.
