tclendenen May 6, 2006 12:36 PM (in response to tysonkey)That error usually implies that the gcc-c++ compiler isn't installed.

tysonkey May 6, 2006 12:53 PM (in response to tclendenen)That's kind of strange, seeing as (according to Synaptic Package Manager), I have gcc 4.0.3-1ubuntu5 installed, and Ubuntu haven't released any updates to it, so far.

tclendenen May 6, 2006 12:56 PM (in response to tysonkey)Does it also say gcc-c++ is installed?

4. Re: Unable to Install VMware Server Beta2 Build 23869 on Ubuntu "Dapper Dra
tysonkey May 6, 2006 1:04 PM (in response to tclendenen)It was installed, but to make sure, I've ran "apt-get install g++" again, to ensure that nothing was missing. But the modules have compiled fine now, leaving me with "The module loads perfectly in the running kernel." And a working VMware Server.

Elmer van Baal May 6, 2006 11:40 PM (in response to tysonkey)Hi,
I read something about using gcc/g++ 4.xx. I think you'll need a 3.x.x version of gcc/g++. Most likely 3.4.x a version. Search in the Dapper repositories for this. Good luck! I'll try this myself once Dapper will be officially released.
regards, Elmer

tysonkey May 10, 2006 12:29 PM (in response to tysonkey)I've just tried running VMware, after installing it and I got the following:
tyson@ubuntu:~$ vmware
/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
What's going on?

gbouro May 10, 2006 2:07 PM (in response to tysonkey)I believe that the kernel is compiled with gcc 3.4 and that is what you should use when installing vmware.
a) install g++-3.4 (you can have it installed in parallel with 4.x)
b) preface each installation and configuration script with CC=/usr/bin/gcc-3.4
e.g.: CC=/usr/bin/gcc-3.4 ./vmware-install.sh

tysonkey May 14, 2006 12:28 PM (in response to gbouro)I've done this, and even with using the vmware-any-any patch, it still doesn't work, and still produces the same problem. Why?

tomaz May 14, 2006 3:11 PM (in response to tysonkey)Try beta3 on latest Dapper (flight 7 or beta2). It works fine. You just need to have:
\- ia32-libs (if on 64bit)
\- build-essential
\- linux-headers-`uname -r`
I had to disable ACPI in order to shut off annoying " rtc: lost some interrupts at 2048Hz." Other than that it works fine.

11. Re: Unable to Install VMware Server Beta2 Build 23869 on Ubuntu "Dapper Dra
tysonkey May 28, 2006 12:47 PM (in response to tomaz)I've got all of the prerequisites, but it still won't work. I have got the latest build of Server (the .tar.gz version, which has an MD5 hash of fdce90d9f91f0ca5329105e2d8be75f0, as does the copy I downloaded).
I've also tried VMware Workstation 5.5.1 build 19175, which doesn't work either.
I've even tried fully uninstalling Server, and then reinstalling it, appending every VMware-related command with "CC=/usr/bin/gcc-3.4 " (without the quotes), and it still fails to run. Why is this constantly happening?

Koxi May 30, 2006 3:54 AM (in response to tysonkey)I had the same problem and fixed it like this
I copied
/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0
to
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libpng12.so.0/
and
/usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux-gnu/3.4.6/libgcc_s.so
to
/usr/lib/vmware-server-console/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1
it seems that the libraries shipped with the vmware server do have problems with the cairo library (no version given ??).

tysonkey May 30, 2006 10:08 AM (in response to Koxi)Thanks for this, it's really helped, as I've been trying to install VMware Server for over a month, only to find that it doesn't work. I only had to modify the paths slightly for it to work on my system, though.

arjanhs Jun 8, 2006 9:16 AM (in response to tysonkey)I got the same problem, have tried copying the files, but still the same error message apears, think it came from compiz, but after changing the name of the shortcut from vmware to vmware-server-console all was working again.
