Can't expand window of VMware Workstation 15 Player

Like the title states, I can't expand the window of the player. Grabbing a window edge and resizing results in the edge bouncing back to the original position. Using the "full screen" button results in the usable window staying the same size but with black bars around all edges.

Using a Windows 10 Host and Manjaro Linux as the guest. VMware tools have been installed on the guest.

have you tried setting the virtual machine setting display manually to the size of your display?

that workd for me on a win10 host with lubuntu 20.04 client

Yeah nothing happens. It'll expand for a half second then bounce back to the initial size. Just as if I tried to expand the window by dragging an edge.

I wonder if you are being restricted by Workstation Player not supporting the “stretch guest” option, I’ve read about this in multiple threads here before...

Having played around with it some more I have been able to make it work, but no idea how. It's entirely inconsistent. Some times on reboot I can, sometimes I cannot. Pausing and resuming seems to be okay though, so if I pause while the screen is correct then when I resume it will still work.

No real clue what's going on.
