Migrated to new Macbook, now want to update from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Hi,

I managed to migrate VMWare Fusion to my new Macbook Pro, but am still not sure how. I encountered "broken pipe" errors and googled how to fix that, and it worked, as far as I can tell. What I don't understand is that I thought I downloaded something called VMWare Player and installed it on the new Macbook and then migrated files from the old Macbook -- with great help from the folks in these forums -- but I now see VMWare Fusion in my dock, not Player. In any case, Windows 7 seems to be running OK, thankfully.

So...I have two questions:

1. I'd like to update Windows 7 to Windows 10 because my wife wants to try Microsoft Flight Simulator. Can I do that upgrade? Is it safe?  Are there problems? Etc.

2. Whether I can or cannot upgrade to Windows 10, should I run "52 important updates" (~645 MB) prompt that I'm getting in Windows 7?

I am not very conversant with virtual machines, Fusion, etc. (which I guess is obvious) and basically use Windows 7 to run an old 2012 version of Quicken as I've found it impossible to run my old Quicken files on my Mac.

Thank you for any help and information, and thanks very much to Wil and the others who advised me on the migration,

Win

Fusion is the VMware product which runs on MacOS.

Workstation is the VMware product which runs on Windows or Linux.

Both products have a Pro version and a Player version.

Sounds like you are running Fusion Player on your Mac.

Moderator: Thread moved to the Windows guest area, your 2 questions are not related to any VMware product (they are questions for Microsoft).

Thanks, and can you tell me where to find the Windows guest area?

Also, my question -- which I guess wasn't very clear -- was more about whether upgrading the OS would cause any problems with Fusion running on a Macbook? I know basically nothing about virtual machines and was concerned to not start an update that would be unstable or cause problems in the VM environment.

You replied to this thread, so you found the Windows guest area. It is also accessible on the screen you see if you click the All VMTN Forums tab towards the top of the screen.

Fusion will not be impacted by you upgrading the OS - as a VM is just a bunch of files an appropriate analogy would be that Microsoft Word would not be impacted by you editing a document.

Probably a good idea to backup the VM before you start, just in case the OS upgrade itself has an issue. To do that, read the first paragraph under the Resolution section of this: VMware Knowledge Base
