I've followed these steps:
I get Mac file icons in Windows, but when I double click on the files nothing happens.
VMware seems unable to open any program in the native Mac environment.
I have the same problem both on my laptop and workstation.
I have exactly the same problem!! anyone has an idea what is going on?
Did it work for you before? If so, when did it stop working?
No, I switched from parallels to Fusion just a month ago - it never worked.
Same situation
Some comments i got was there might be leftovers from parallels inside the „Image“ who are causing this.
JMprod Any progress on your side?
I reinstalled VMware and reinstalled Windows, I'm able to open files. Mac icons no longer visible in Windows, it only shows VMware logo.
My keyboard in Windows is not mapped like in macOS, even though I use the Windows keyboard profile in VMWare. Not able to get the @-key.
I can't stand this system.
Same here, keyboard is not mapped. I saw in article online in which you can install bootcamp to get the mapping in Fusion. Haven't done this yet.
Hi,
My keyboard in Windows is not mapped like in macOS, even though I use the Windows keyboard profile in VMWare. Not able to get the @-key.
If you're not able to get the @-key then your Windows VM does not have the correct Windows keyboard configured.
This is a configuration in the guest. It should not have anything to do with a host-guest mapping.
At least not in VMware Fusion.
Windows menu -> Settings -> Time & Language -> Language
Then make sure your language is installed, click the language -> options
There you can add the keyboard with the layout that you need.
Without knowing your language and mac model.. there's not much I can suggest.

No need to install boot camp drivers (it isn't going to help either, just adds more cruft)

Thanks wila - my Mac model MacBook Air, Win 10 at Fusion 12.
Attached my settings - what do I need to change?
wila I can see there is still a lot of parallels leftovers inside the VM - sadly I cant re-install the image. Is there a tool which can clean this up?
Hi,
Well I can't guess you keyboard layout ... I don't know what country you are?
Each country tends to have their own layout, sometimes even more than one.
if you have a "@" above the 2 then I'd say you probably have a english US keyboard.
Not sure where the "@" is on a german keyboard?
For your other question, I am not a Parallels user, sorry, don't know any cleanup tools.
Perhaps somebody else knows.

To open a file in Windows guest using Host application, please try the following steps
1. Install VMware Tools inside guest
2. Check 'Open your Windows files and web links using Mac applications' in VM's Settings -> Default Applications
3. Enable Shared Folder for Windows guest, VM's Settings -> Sharing
4. In Windows guest, put your files in VMware Shared Folders
5. Right click on the file, select Open With -> Default Host Application
bfan Thanks but the point is that this is not working because of parallels leftovers in the system. Somehow VM tools doesn't overwrite what parallels did to the VM before. Is there any other way?
I don't have experience on this. is it possible to uninstall parallels tools first then open the VM with Fusion to see whether it works.
