Chrome and VSCode are extremely slow

Hello,

I have VMWare Fusion Professional Version 11.5.3 (15870345) installed on a MacBook Pro (16-inch) 8-core Intel Core i9 and 16Gb of RAM running macOS Catalina (10.15.4).

I use VMWare Fusion to run Windows 10 Pro (Version 1903, OS build 18362.778).

Here are the characteristics of the VM:

  • Processor and memory:
    • 8 processors cores
    • 8Gb for memory
  • Display
    • Accelerate 3D Graphics is checked
    • Always Use High Performance Graphics
    • Use full resolution for Retina display is checked

I have a problem with Chrome and VSCode. The two applications are extremely slow. Other applications (Windows new Terminal, Microsoft Edge, File Explorer, ...) seem OK.

Does anyone have an explanation or a solution to the problem ?

Thank you !

First thing I would do is reduce the VM CPU count, try it with 4 and see what happens.

Thanks for the answer.

The VM is currently compiling Qt. As soon as it is finished I test your suggestion!

I tried what you suggest and set the number of CPU count to 4. It does not change.

Only application based on chromium are slow :

  • hyper.js
  • vscode
  • chrome
  • new edge version (bases on chromium)

Other application work fine.

I do not know if it is a problem with VMWare or a problem on Windows.

I have latencies of one to two seconds each time I try to type on the keyboard or open / close a file.

I do not have this problem on a Windows which does not run in VMWare.

I would keep the CPU count for the VM below 8 regardless of what else you try, 4 should be OK.

What's your physical hardware utilisation like while you are running this VM and executing those tasks?

Have you considered dropping down the level of graphics to see if that helps?

Hi,

I follow your advice, maybe I did not understand well. Things are getting worse 😄

It's funny because I can use for instance Visual Studio with no performance issue but not Visual Studio Code which normally is more lighter and faster than VS.

About the the host utilisation when I use Visual Code I can see that GPU and CPU usage increase :

I am using 11.5.6 - and have the same problem - I've started to use Firefox instead.

But it's really not great.

AHHHH ....

I found this:

Turning off helped a significantly!!!

But this is "Chrome only" 😉

The OP had too many virtual cores assigned to the guest - what's your host and guest config?
