Vmware workstation 15 pro troubles after windows update

Hello

Back from my holidays on monday I had the bad surprise of having all my virtual machines not working anymore. The sympom is that the virtual machines starts apparently in normal way, but in fact are sluggish, input from keyboard slow as hell, and mouse pointer missing or impossible to track movement. Impossible to use, was impossible even to launch a task manager to check cpu status, I could send the ctrl-alt-del but from there impossible to reach the task manager.

This with all my VMs, with different types of guest Os and hardware settings, from XP to WIN7 to WIN10, from 1GB up to 6GB of ram assigned. The same with all of them.

Tried to revert back to previous vmware workstation release, nope

Tried to use a previously saved vm, nope

Tried a combination of both the previous steps (an old saved vm with a previous release of workstation), nothing

Finally I solved restoring pc to a previous restore point, dated back in july. At that point everything worked properly once again, with latest release of vmware workstation, and latest state of any VM.

At that point the suspect was some windows update, so I suspended all updates and checked the windows update log, searching for some recent update.

What I found was that on monday two updates got installed:

- cumulative .NET framework 3.5 and 4.8  update (KB4569751) that I think is irrelevant

- cumulative update for Win10 1909 x64 (KB4565351) that I suspect is the cause of my troubles

Now obviously I am in fear to go in trouble again in next future, because I cannot keep updates suspended forever.... So I need some long-term solution!

My configuration:

HP zbook

CPU Intel Core I7-8550U

16GB RAM

HDD SSD 1TB

OS Win 10 Pro x64 1909 build 18363.959

Italian language

graphic cards Intel UHD Graphics 620 & Radeon Pro WX 3100

VmWare Workstation pro 15.5.6 build 16341506

Hi robertoicardi,

Try to update your windows to the 20H1 verion (2004).

You can do it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Just click on the Update now button and follow the steps the application shows.

Kind regards,

Tornaci

Hi, thanks for your answer.

Already tried to upgrade, but I cannot because of an incompatibility with my audio card (conexant ISST) that is reported on Microsoft web sites: all computers with such audio card are blocked from upgrading.... Windows 10, version 2004 and Windows Server, version 2004 - Windows Release Information | Microsoft ...

so no luck in that sense .... Smiley Sad

Hi Tornaci

at the end I followed your advice. I upgraded the conexant driver with the latest one, and dared the luck upgrading to 20H1 version.

All worked well, and now I am enjoying my vms working properly, and my computer upgraded to the latest.

So, thank you for your help!

Hi robertoicardi,

I had the exact same problem. Thanks to the kind members of this community I could solve my problem. I am glad that it also worked for you.

Hope you can help others in the feature with their problems.

PS: I saw that you are using a SSD in your system. As a word of advice: please take a look at the "defragment and Optimize Drives" tool in windows. If the "scheduled optimization" is turned ON, make shure that you DESELECT any SSD's in your system. You can also turn it completely OFF if you want to. This is a flaw of the 20H1 update where it defragments your SSD's too much which makes them last not as long as they should be doing.

Kind regards,

Tornaci

Hello Tornaci

talked too early.

Yesterday after upgrade, as I said, all worked properly.

This morning (and changed nothing from yesterday) once again the original problem: mouse pointer floating around, and virtual machines inaccessible.

Had to uninstall update of windows, now all is working, but I am still here with my problem pending.... Smiley Sad

Hi robertoicardi,

Sorry to hear it dind't work out in the end.

I have some questions and suggestions:

Have you updated your VMware tools and all components?

If not, please do so and try reinstalling VMware if it doesn't help.

Also have a look at your host drivers and bad updates. Update anything that is missing or too old.

Please let me know if this helped you out.

Kind regards,

Tornaci

hello, i seems to have the same problem. At my end it seems to have started with the 20H1 update. With 1909 there was no problem here. I updated my windows to 20H2 and vmware to version 16. Still the same issues with the mouse and keyboard. I tried a lot but not a complete new windows installation, but is that neccesary ?

VmWare, Please help us ...
