Which vmware product to buy?

I'm try to figure out which vmware product to use with my three host with two CPU in each host. I was going to use vSphere Essential Plus, cause it had all the things I need for my company. " HA, Replication, vMotion" But after doing some more research I can not get a 100% straight answer on the vMotion part. Will Essential Plus do long distance vMotion or is that only vSphere Enterprise Plus? I need long distance vMotion for the setup I am building. Two host at the main building and one host in Chicago. I would really appreciate any thought or advice on which vmware product I should use. Thank you

Enterprise Plus, as per this: VMware Knowledge Base

Hmmm........  isnt that a Long Distance svMotion rather than vMotion?

The svMotion is not part of Ess+.

I'm not pro at licensing, but svmotion is just moving from one datastore to another, the long distance vmotion feature is used to move in most cases a datacenter to another datacenter so the long distance vmotion is still needed since your still moving computer. If it was just svmotion then both sites would need connect to the same storage, which shouldn't be the case.

Well.... now you have mixed it a little bit

He wanna transfer compute and storage with a up a and running VM over a long distance.   We forget that with a long distance for a moment and find out that you even cant transfer compute+storage of a live VM with the Ess+ license over a short distance Smiley Wink

So the answer is no and it will not work.

I hate abbreviations, I thought you where talking about enterprise plus not essential plus. Regardless his direct question was

". Will Essential Plus do long distance vMotion or is that only vSphere Enterprise Plus? I need long distance vMotion for the setup I am building. Two host at the main building and one host in Chicago. I would really appreciate any thought or advice on which vmware product I should use. Thank you

The answer is you need enterprise plus, which is what Scott said.

you *can* transfer comozte+storage of a running VM with essentials plus
what you can't do is storgae motion alone

Youre right!. I was wrong because i thought i got an error msg and the end of the wizard.

... what you can't do is storgae motion alone

Also right.

License not available to perform the operation. The VMware vSphere 6 Essentials Plus license for "Host" xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx does not include "vSphere Storage vMotion". Upgrade the license.

But make this sense?

You can migrate compute

You can migrate compute and storage

But you cant migrate storage?

Looks funny to me Smiley Happy

it don't make much sense for the user, it does for VMware because people doing storage motion more often for whatever reason will buy a bigger license, for migration when you exchange all hosts and storages every 5 years it's goofd enough that way, in the worst case you need to do some computing node vmotions more, but who cares with 10 Gigabit

Thank you all for the input. So is the the final answer is vSphere Enterprise Plus or vSphere Essential Plus? Just to give a little more background on the setup I am going to run. Three host that are build the same 2CPU, 256GB memory, 16TB hard drives. Two host will be in the main building in Florida. One host will be in Chicago. All three host will be in the same cluster tied together by a direct firewall to firewal connection. ping time is 40ms. When a hurricane comes migrate a few servers to Chicago not just the storage but the whole vm. Live or turn off vmotion. VPN to Chicago with laptops. Thx again.

One link VMware Knowledge Base can say more than hundred words. You have to scroll down a bit and than you see the technical requirements and also the needed license which is Enterprise Plus as already told.
