P2V Help with Windows Vista.

Hello community,

I have a laptop with a healthy but old windows Vista install.  Its patched to the latest and seems to work well. However its is old HW and I'd like to convert to a VM.

I tried the Vmware Converter which is part of Fusion 11.5 to my mac. This failed with communication errors, Even though I can ping the laptop  IP from the mac and vise versa. I turned of the Vista Firewall. Tried both Hardwire and wireless Ethernet.

Support recommended I use the VMware stand alone converter. I tried to install this and it complains about not being able to find open SSL. so I installed open SSL into the system path several times but the install continues to fail, Open SSL seems to work properly. I can bring up the command prompt and issue commands.

Support says the stand alone product is free and that  "OS level defects which can't be overcome".  So they pointed me here.

Evidently I need either:

1. a zip file of a previously installed windows vista VMware standalone converter for vista I can copy to my machine or

2. a 3rd party converter for Vista.

I did some research on the 3rd party converter but it appears these are all designed for ESX vs Fusion.

Anyone out there who has experience with Vista P2V they can share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

They were referring to: vCenter Converter: P2V Virtual Machine Converter | VMware

and convert that machine to a VM on an external USB drive.  Vista is on the supported OS list.  Just download the installer, install it on your machine, plug in the external drive, and it should just work.
