moving ESXi host into cluster

Hello all.

I have ESXi host that is currently not in any cluster. It has some Datastores attached.

I need to move that host into a cluster that has diff. datastores and i just need for the new ESXi host to inherit cluster datastores.

Do i need to unmount datastores before moving the host or if i just move the host it will inherit cluster datastores automatically and current ESXi datastores will be removed.

Thanks in advance

What sort of storage are you using to back the datastores for that single host, and for the other hosts already in the cluster?

There is no such concept of “inheriting datastores”, you will need to setup the host to access the underlying storage in order for it be able to have access to the same datastores as the other hosts.

And if you have VMs on the existing datastores it can access, you should then migrate those before removing any datastores from that host.

Its all shared storage on SAN (for both ESXi host and cluster but different datastores)

ESXi host currently is in maint mode.

I dont really need storage that is currently mounted on ESXi.

I need datastores that are mounted on cluster and esxi hosts there to support vmotion and DRS

Hope it makes sense

Present the SAN storage to the new host, the same as you have for the current hosts in the cluster.

You dont need to umount the datastores from that Host.  Just place it into MM and move it into the cluster, make all needed configuration and youre done.

Keep in mind that HA only works for particular VMs when all the Hosts have access to the same storage, otherwise not HA for these VMs.
