Windows 10 -- Cannot start VMs due to HyperVisor / Device Guard

Hello all,

I just received a new company laptop and I cannot install/use VMs. I'm trying to install Workstation/Player 15.5.

I can't upgrade to Windows 10 20H1 due to corporate restrictions and I cannot get any VM solution to work. I've also tried the bcdedit.exe and it won't work.

Anyone successful that can send some advice?

Have you tried v15.5.2 which seems stable for Win10 <2004 versions https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads/details?downloadGroup=WKST-1552-WIN&productId=799 ?

What error(s) are you getting with 15.5.2 and what is your host build?

Also, are you using a corporate PC that might have policies implemented impeding the installation of software?

I still receive the following...

"VMware Workstation and Device/Credential Guard are not compatible. VMware Workstation can be run after disabling Device/Credential Guard. Please visit http://www.vmware.com/go/turnoff_CG_DG for more details."

I'm on a new HP Elitebook with Secure Boot and I'm wondering if that is the problem.

The document linked in the error states that

If using Windows 10 prior to 20H1 release, disable Device Guard or Credential Guard to resolve this issue.

So following the procedure in the suggested document Manage Windows Defender Credential Guard (Windows 10) - Microsoft 365 Security | Microsoft Docs  does not solve the issue?

I had a similar issue with 15.5.6 and Windows 1909.   I had Hyper V enabled and no Device Guard enabled.

  1. Uninstall Hyper V in the Programs and features in the host OS.
  2. Reboot Windows 10 host OS
  3. Programs and Features and "repair" VMWare Workstation in the host OS.
  4. Reboot Windows 10 host OS.

I can now start my Virtual Machines using 15.5.6 VMware workstation.

I suspect the issue is related to how VMware Workstation determines Hyper V is enabled/disabled.

Oddly I've never had anything in the Hyper-V section of Windows Components/Features installed. They have always been unchecked. I've also tried to install the features, reboot and remove.

I'm wondering if the HP Elitebook Sure Start isn't getting into the way in some way...

Thoughts?
