Best way to clone an existing VM on ESXi 6.5.0 server

Hi!

I'd like to create a clone from an existing VM on my ESXi 6.5.0 server and possibly reduce its size (actually the VM has an HD of 70 GB and the its overall size is 140 GB).

I can stop the running machine without any problem.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance

If you have vCenter you can run a "Clone VM" action. Its just simple and easy.

If you dont have vCenter, you can follow this guide to "clone" the VM: How to Clone VMs Without vCenter in 5 Easy Steps

And to shrink the disk, take a look at this one: VMware Knowledge Base

Hope that helps!

Is this related to your ongoing mission to backup a VM?

How to safely stop a Copy datastore file task

Can't download entire folder from ESXi 6.5 datastore

If so, using a proper backup tool is the best answer.
