Loosing access to virtual machine running on vSphere with Lost access to volume and bootbank cannot be found errors

Hello,

We have vSphere esxi v 6.7 running on a Dell Optiplex 7060 PC which has a Win 10 Virtual Machine running on it.

Virtual machine becomes inaccessible once every few days. Reboot option through vSphere web and through SSH does not work.

Starts working only after CPU is rebooted.

Usual errors displayed in the events are (Also refer attached screen shots)

Lost access to volume Datastore due to connectivity issues.

Issue detected in ha-datacenter. Bootbank cannot be found at path '/bootbank'

We have the same issue across 4 different hosts running on same dell Optiplex 7060 PC, all have a 500 gb SSD for storage.

I have installed latest patch available for vsphere 6.7 update 3. Current build: 6.7.0 Update 3 (Build 16075168).

Disabled ATS - ESXi host loses connectivity to a VMFS datastore (2113956)  as per the following article

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2113956

However issue still persists.

Please help me resolve this problem.

Regards
Deepak

You're running ESXi on unsupported hardware here, probably with a junk storage controller. Your error messages indicates either a hardware issue or a driver issue with that storage controller. Only suggestion would be to get compatible, supported hardware in the first place and try again. ESXi is not meant for nor designed for consumer-grade hardware like the Optiplex PC line.

Hi daphnissov,

Thanks for your input.

ESXI storage adapter listed right now is 82801HR/HO/HH (ICH8R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller.

Is there any option or provision in ESXI for me try changing it to see if it makes any difference ?

Dan

Get a Dell PowerEdge Server. Stop using a Desktop Office PC.

100% with Joerg. ESXi isn't designed for desktop PCs.

Was using ESXI v6.5 on an lower configuration HP PC for many years.

We had no issues with Dell optiplex until march this year.

Any ideas on things that we could modify or work on existing setup please.

No ideas other than the following commentary:

  • ESXi 6.5 and 6.7 are very different. The point difference does not reflect the large number of changes.
  • Even on a "lower configuration HP PC" it was still unsupported. The fact that it worked at all was a blessing.
  • When running on unsupported, consumer hardware, performing major updates is no guarantee that past operation will continue unaffected.
  • Every time you do what you're doing, you're gambling. Sometimes you lose.
