Can't update/re-install VMware Tools for WIN 10

I'm having problems updating VMware Tools for WIN 10: The virtual machine is started and I select in the Fusion menu: Virtual Machine -> Update VMware Tools. The installation window opens and the installation starts. Then I get error messages that a network resource is not available, a path cannot be found and the old version of VMware Tools cannot be deleted.

I have already read the corresponding entries in the KB and e.g. deleted registry entries related to VMware and searched in this temp folder in "appdata" and in the whole WIN 10 installation for the requested resource.

What do I have to do to simply reinstall VMware Tools for WIN 10?

Hi, electricarts

I think we can take that the previous tools version is the one in Fusion 11.5.3(If your current Fusion is 11.5.5).

Would you please find the tools installer in VMware-Fusion-11.5.3.dmg/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/isoimages/windows.iso?

https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?productId=681&downloadGroup=FUS-1153

Mount the windows.iso onto the CDROM of this virtual machine

In the windows, open the CDROM and double click onto the setup64.exe

Continue until the page that you could select Remove.

Remove the current VMware Tools.

Install the new VMware Tools.

If it is not working, maybe you could have a try of the following steps:

1. BACKUP your virtual machine entirely! (Or clone a VM of this current one)

  • Uninstall vmtools in the control panel
  • Stop VMware Tools service
  • Stop other VM* services
  • Delete C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools
  • Delete C:\Windows\System32\drivers\vm3*
  • Delete C:\Windows\System32\vm3*
  • Delete C:\Windows\SysWOW64\vm3*
  • Delete C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Tools
  • Delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\
  • Open regedit
  • Delete all VMware Tools regedit contents
  • Reinstall a correct version VMTools

Best Regards

Hi, electricarts

What is the version and build number of the VMware Tools please?

It could be found by Right Click on the VMware Tools icon > About VMware Tools.

C:\Users\vmware>"c:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\VMwareToolboxCmd.exe" -v

A.B.C.XXX (build-YYYYYYY)

Hey zhaokaiy,

thanks for your reply!

There is no VMware folder in Program Files (anymore). With all these attempts to fix the problem, this entire folder has probably been deleted.

Cheers

setup64.exe can't be opened. Only setup.exe.

When I do this, the VMware Tools installer starts (as it did several times before when I tried to update). Nowhere there is the option to click "Remove". Only the already posted error messages appear.

Now I try the 2nd variant ...
