Can I use USB ethernet adapters?

Hello everyone.

Recently, i've installed ESXi 6.7 U3 on a 'Macmini5,3' from Apple (Mac mini server 2011, Sandy Bridge)

This is for home lab use.  I appreciate this is not a system which is officially supported, but it installed and it works great.

Under manage>hardware it recognizes the hardware as actually being macbookpro8,2 (which is also i7 sandy bridge from the same year)

The mac mini has 4 x USB 2.0 ports and 1 x Thunderbolt 1 port.  My options are purchasing USB to gigabit ethernet adapters or possibly thunderbolt to ethernet if supported.

Can I use one or several USB or Thunderbolt ethernet adapters, and if so which chipsets are likely to work?

Is the hardware detection differences likely to give me problems?

I should point out I was unable to install 7.0 as it doesn't recognize the on-board ethernet due to the tg3 driver.

Thanks
