vROps/vRLI restore/recovery of a single node in a cluster

Hi Community

I have a question about the restore process of vROps and vRLI.

In the documentation I can only find hints to the restore of the whole cluster but not for a single node of a cluster.

I assume i have to deploy a new node and add it to the cluster. Or do I just restore one single node from backup?

If anyone could point me to the correct documentation or other links that describe the procedure, that would be great.

Thanks very much for any help and regards

Jonas

If I now loose one worker node, is it possible to just restore only that node from backup? I would only lose the data that was saved in the time between the backup and losing the node, compared to re-create the worker node.

Yes and No. Yes, you can just restore the failed Node and no, the remaining Nodes are continuing to process the incomming data. But yes, the data between the failure and the last backup on that particular node will be lost. Once the failed node has been restored it will join back the cluster.

And how about the master? If i loose the master, I have to restore the whole cluster?

No, as long as the Worker Nodes are still available it's possible to only restore the Master Node. But please follow the approach described in the documentation: Restore Nodes and Clusters

Have a look at the documentation for vROps and vRLI
vROps: Back Up and Restore
vRLI: Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery Overview

Hi Rick

Thank you for your response.

Just to clarify. I found the following sentence in the vROps documentation:

"All nodes are backed up and restored at the same time. You cannot back up and restore individual nodes."

Does this mean that I have to restore the whole vROps Cluster form backup, even when I just lost one node?

Seems strange to me, but I'll accept it if this is true.

And for vRLI, I was not able to find a similar sentence. But is the same sentence true for vRLI as well?

The documentation only shows the procedure for restoring the whole cluster.

Thanks again for your help and regards

I am afraid that you need to restore the entire cluster. You must backup the entire cluster to include all VMs. Restoring only part of the cluster may cause synchronization problems preventing the cluster from going online.

If you have a backup tool like vSphere Data Protection or NetBackup restore the nodes to a new host/cluster and bring up the environment. Before restoring to a different host , power off the virtual machines at the original location to avoid hostname or IP conflicts.

jddias: Can you confirm that you cannot restore individual nodes in a vROps cluster? So to be able to restore a single node in a cluster you need to restore the entire cluster, right?

If you lost an analytics node that is not the Master in a HA cluster, you can simply add a new node.  You don't need to restore unless you lost two or more nodes.  If you're running HA and the master replica is promoted you can add a new node to be the replica.

Losing one node in a non-HA cluster will require a restore of the entire cluster.

Thanks jddias for clarification.

I assume the same is true for a data node in a HA cluster.

Just deploying a new one. Correct?

Could anyone else confirm for vRLI as well?

Thanks everyone!! Much appreciated!

*EDIT* I edited my initial response, I realized I stated things wrong - that's what I get for multi-tasking! :smileylaugh:

Tagging luderitz for vRLI.

Hi Jonas,

Rearding vRLI; In a Cluster the most important node is your master node, it must be backed up in any case. Worker nodes mainly store the collected data but are recommended to backup too. However, it is possible to re-create a worker node from scratch in case you have lost one as long as the master node is available but you'll loose the data that was stored on that particular node.

Does that help?

Thanks EagleB5 for your feedback.

It definitely helps.

One or two follow up questions.

I backup the whole vRLI Cluster (all three nodes in this example).

If I now loose one worker node, is it possible to just restore only that node from backup?

I would only lose the data that was saved in the time between the backup and losing the node, compared to re-create the worker node.

And how about the master? If i loose the master, I have to restore the whole cluster?

Thanks!!
