OpenMediaVault 5.3.9 on VMWare Worksation 15.5.2 build-15785246

Hi,

Has anybody got OpenMediaVault 5.3.9 working on VMWare workstation 15.5.2

It seems that the install never finishes. I just get a blank (kind of screen) part way through the install.

See the attached picture.

Any suggestions on how to setup within VMware workstation.

Thanks,

Ward

Hi Ward,

You probably have found a solution by now but just in case you have not, here's how I was able to install OMV on VMWare 16.2.4.

Once you have created your VM, make sure to point your CDROM to the ISO image. Once the machine is started, deactivate the network interface. Let the install proceed until the network auto configuration fails. Select "Continue" and then "Do not COnfigure the network at this time". Enter a hostname and "Continue".

The rest of the installation should continue. (I won't list everything the system ask)/ Eventually the system will come to the point where it wants to setup the repository for software and updates. When this happens, select your country, the mirror you want to use and the proxy if any. This will fail and it's expected. When that happens, go back to vmware and reactivate the network interface. Once that is done, go to another terminal (Alt-F2 for example) and press enter to start a shell. In that shell issue the command "dhclient ens33" (My interface was called ens33, not sure if yours will be called the same but it should be easy to find). After a few seconds, your prompt should return. You can do an "ip addr" to confirm that your got an actual IP address.

Now go back to the main terminal where the install is stopped. (Alt-F1). Select "Continue". The system will ask you to select your mirror again. Select your country and then the mirror and proxy if needed. This time around, it should work. The install should proceed normally. There's just one more thing to do to get a stable system. After the installation completes, have the system reboot. (I think it does on its own but if not, just reboot it). Login using the root account and the password you set during the install. At the prompt start the program "omv-firstaid". Select the first option "Configure network interface". (This is the step that we jumped over in the install)

Select your network interface and configure away. Once that is completed, the system should return you to the command prompt. At this point, you can reboot the system and you should have a working OMV in VMWare.

I tested this with OMV 6.0.24 on VMWare Workstation 16.2.x.

I hope this helps you out.

Pierre
