can not change disk size anymore, disk parameter shows pipe symbol?

    mgombocz Novice

i have vcenter and vsphere 6.7 .. updated today the vcenter to latest build (but not the hosts), restarted and everything went fine.

then i started to resize (extend) disks on some machines which worked nicely.

When i suddenly tried to extend some of another guests disk.. there was a pipe symbol and i could not access the size field on HDD Settings.

i also checked for snapshots, but there werent any. I also checked the other guests on different hosts in the cluster, but now i can not edit a single one.

i can change memory, cpu... but not the hdd size anymore.. like something went wrong in the ui.

i also tried a different browser (usually i use firefox, but then changed to chromium, where i had to freshly log in myself), same strange error.

has anyone an idea what i could do?

      here a screenshot of that...

this is a screenshot with a guest with more than one disk (vcenter)

Now i also see a unexpected error in update manager... maybe the update has destroyed ma vcsa?

I have a customer who reported the same issue recently. The VM's virtual disks neither showed up in vCenter, nor when connected to the hosts directly, and even VMRC showed nothing.

I will try to contact him tomorrow, and ask him for the resolution (in case he got one yet).

Ok, when creating a new machine i get following error:

            • Task nameCreate virtual machine
            • Target: xxx
            • StatusA general system error occurred: PBM error occurred during PreCreateCheckCallback: Connection refused: The remote service is not running, OR is overloaded, OR a firewall is rejecting connections.

There are also Errors when i click on Cluster->Monitor->Events

Cannot login user XXX.LAN\vsphere-webclient-7f3aae95-88a8-48c7-bca1-172f65745b23@ no permission

.. also for vpxd-extension and machine...

Just a guess. The error message points to PBM (Policy Based Management).

What you can do, is to check the status of the  vmware-sps service.

you are right, this service hangs with "starting" but does not changed to "started"..

in /var/log/vmware/vmware-sps/sps.log there are a lot of those errors

If you have a support agreement with VMware, consider opening a support case.

The error that you see looks like https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/66791?lang=en_us which should - according to the KB article - has been resolvd in v6.7 U1b. However, you mentioned that you updated to the latest version, which should not be affected!?

Which build are you currently running, and from which build did you update? I'm asking because direct updates from Updates from v6.7 U1b to the latest are not supported.

the last time i've upgraded before was one month ago (hotfix), can not remeber the exact build number, but vcsa should not be too old..

ive installed the version (VMware-VCSA-all-6.7.0-15132721.iso) freshly this februar, so it should not be off too much i think.

                      actual version:

does this help? i try to figure out with our it-dept if our essentials contract is eligible so that i can open up a support case.

thank you for your help so far!

EDIT: i looked up that the iso was 6.7U3b

My latest backup was made with VC-6.7.0U3e-Appliance-FP .. but i only can find images for U3b or U3f .. can i restore an U3e backup with U3f or U3b?

in addition to the link you send me,

there was no error in sms_sbpm_firstboot.... (i could not even find the file, and similar files (with numbers in there) showed no errors.

in sps.log there are similar errors .. yes

in vpxd.log are also the same errors.. yes

sadly we have bought essentials but no support contract.

I got feedback from my customer, that the disk sizes showed up again, after rebooting the vCSA, but they still have some issues.

What may be an option, is to backup the vCenter Server configuration from the VAMI (on port 5480) to e.g. an FTP server, and use the VMware-VCSA-all-6.7.0-15976714.iso installation image to deploy a new vCSA using the "Restore" option. Note that Restore is only supported with the same build that has been used for a configuration backup.

Alternatively, if your environment is not very complex - what I don't assume with an Essentials edition - you may simply deploy a new vCSA.

yeah, this is what i am trying to do now, to restore that thing, and as last resort, reinstall that thing again.

Thank you for your help and stay safe!

edit: fun fact, can not make backup of config: Invalid vCenter Server Status: All required services are not up! Stopped services: 'updatemgr, sps'.

so if that sps one fails, thats a really big issue.
