ESXi 6.5U3 - Management Network (ethernet) not available if you change physical switches

I've noticed this on multiple installations on different hardware.

I have a fresh install of Vmware Esxi 6.5 U3.

After inital testing, I move the phsyical network cable thats plugged into a single unteamed nic used by the Management Network from one switch to another. Now there is no netowkr connectivity. It does not matter if I try DHCP or static assignment, there is no connectivity... ICMP fails etc.

Whats the deal here.. is there a security feature that if the primary Management network NIC is changed, that it just cuts off access?

Does anyone know how to resolve this... I've done lots of searching and cant really find anything.

OK - thank you for your help. As it turns out - the physical adapter is not compatible with the type of switch (Netgear GSxxxx) Seems both sites had identical series switches.. How bizarre.

Hi Jansen,

Do you have the same issue if you move to a different port on the same switch?

I have tried this on my home lab (6.5 u3) and I do not see this behavior.

What network cards are in your host?

Thanks,

Fouad

The host is a HPE Proliant ML350 G10.. the adapter is Adapter 1 - HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 369i Adapter, and its in port 1

Here is what the ILO shows.

However you can see here the network is configured :

I should also advise I have seen identical behavior on 6.5.0 Update 2 (Build 10719125) on a ProLiant DL360 Gen10 with an identical single NIC (unteamed) configuration.

ok, multiple dumb question time Smiley Happy

When it is working does the iLo show the network status as connected, up, something other than unknown?

Does the link light on your switch show that the port is up?

And you have checked the firmware/driver interop?

If I have got it right the link below should take you to the right page:

VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Search

Did you ever try just moving port on the same switch?

Thanks,

Fouad
