Windows 7 scan A/V of attached or network device

What's the best method to guarantee a reliable Antivirus scan from a Windows guest to a massive external USB drive or NAS (in ths case over network)..

hen i mean 'massive i mean 4TB..

Currently, since i know Gigabit is going be better, i connect thunderbot-to-eithnet on Mac and share the drive this to VM, instead of directly reconfigure network settings in Fusion access.. I do this because its the only gigabit port i have is NAS, all other equipment or ports on router are 100Mbits

However doing shared folder this way seem clunky on large scans because i'm constancy getting beach balls on windows unresponsive. Is a direct connect to Windows always better ?  What do others do to get round the beach balling with large drives?

Unfortunately, i had connect to share on NAS from Mac, them from fusion, share that folder, to do an a A/V scan rather than a direct connection to Windows via Thunderbolt..

More reliable..  At least for large folders. I dunno why

Direct connect via USB will be the fastest and most reliable.

Out of curiosity, why the scans?  They've been generally depreciated as there's little value over in-memory/on-access detection.
