Unable to install vCenter converter

I am trying to install vCenter converter standalone 6.2 and I am receiving an error that it can't copy converter-agent.xml, error 29163. I am running Windows 7 x64.

I have tried:

1) running directly as an administrator.

2) Stopping the vmware processes.

3) Fixing the permissions on the temp folder.

4) Stopping AVS.

5) Disabling UAC.

I can see that the file is created and then deleted. I am not on a managed workstation or on a domain but on a personal computer. I am trying the local install. Should I try the server? I am attaching the error and the logs. Please advise what else I should do.

Hi,

What you are doing is correct, you can also install it on your windows 7 computer.

Try to download it from here:

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone

Hi,

read this post and follow the solution of the last answer. It seems to me more than correct:

VMWare Converter Standalone v4.3.0 - Error 29163

...Finally I decided to do a Windows "switch user".  I logged into Windows with my administrator account and was able to run the msi file without any errors!  The installed worked and the installed program runs while logged in with my standard user now.  Chalk it up to UAC bugginess.  Hopefully this helps you.

The version of the vcenter converter is different but the problem is identical.

@ I saw that thread and I did try running the administrator account. I also tried disabling UAC, fixing permissions on temp (which wasn't an issue), turning off the VMware processes, and disabling AVS. Any other suggestions? The installer is deleting that file. This is a bug in the installer. Do you have any clues from the log file?

I'm trying to convert a hdd on a dead computer I was using as a server to a virtual machine so I could run it on a replacement. If that converter isn't going to do that will something else?

Okay, but it's different to run the program as an administrator or log into the computer as an administrator and then run the program.

I did both. First I ran it as an administrator and then I logged into the administrator account directly. That's what I meant when I said that I ran it directly as the administrator and tried another half or so dozen tries. Did you find anything in the logs?

Hey, I just installed this converter successfully without any issue in my PC with windows 7. What I observed in the log as have user profile problem. Please delete the user profile Admin~1 or rename old and logoff. now login make sure user profile is not show temporary  like ADMIN~1. It should be ADMIN. You can try to install vCenter converter.

NKS Please Mark Helpful/correct if my answer resolve your query.

I tried running it from an elevated command prompt and from a new administrator account. Both failed with the same error message.

AlessandroRomeo68 I was able to install converter on a separate install of 7. I'm confused though. I want to take the hard drive of a dead server and convert it to a virtual machine so that I can run it on a replacement server. How do I do that? In vCenter I can only find the options of using the local machine or a remote machine. Keep in mind the server is dead so I cann't run it to access the files that way. I can slave the hard drive as an external drive in an enclosure to access the files. What's the best way to turn it into a vmdk? I know that I can slave the hard drive to the virtual machine but I'd rather convert it.

I found this thread but I'm confused about the exact command to convert the hard drive. How to convert laptop drive (with a dead laptop) for use as VMware image?

Lets say that the data is on drive h:\ and is a single partition. I am planning on putting it on a separate external drive that is unused. I've actually already created a virtual machine called broken server. Lets say it's i:\broken server. What's the command to convert it?
