VMware Fusion CD and Vm Tools

I am using VMware Fusion 11.5.2 and have 4 VM's

• Windows 7
• ESXi 6.5
• Windows Server 2012
• Red Hat 8

When I start Windows 7 and Red Hat 8 I get I get the following message:

     Cannot connect the virtual device sata0:0 because no corresponding device is available on the host.

I do not get that message when I start ESXi 6.5 or Windows Server 8

When I started Windows 7 it updated the VMware tools.

On Red Hat 8 VMware tools used to work. I was sharing files with my Mac. On the sharing settings it says it will not work until VMware tools is installed.

It is installed. I have uninstalled it using yum remove open-vm-tools-desktop an reinstalled it using yum install open-vm-tools-desktop.

I have spent ages looking at articles and can't find a resolution.

Any ideas please?

Hi,

Take a test on the Windows 7 virtual machine.

• Turn off the virtual machine
• open "settings"
• remove cd-rom from the device list
• turn on the virtual machine

I don't get the error obvoisly because there is no CD drive. As soon as I add a device, cd rom, I get the error.

The VMware tools isue is the issue I need to get fixed.

It is fine as you prefer. Maybe I didn't explain myself well, the problem is not if there is a CD inside the CD-Rom drive, ... but the Sata controller, that's why I told you to try to remove it.

If I were you, I would try to remove it and then add another new 0: 2

mine is just a piece of advice.

I meant that there was no CD drive. I removed the CD Drive, rebooted and then added a new CD Drive, then rebooted and have the same issue.

Another question,

Were these virtual machines created by new ones in your environment or were they imported?

did they have snapshots? or linked CD-ROMs when they were exported? (if they have been exported)

Windows 7 was created in Fusion 8 and then I upgraded to version 11.

Red Hat I took a snapshot and then restored the snapshot.

On Red Hat I have done

     ps -ef | grep tool

     ps -ef | grep vm

There are no processes so looks like vm tools is not running

the vmtoolsd is running but when trying to share or use cut and paste, it doesn't work

Snapshots across Fusion versions (or hardware changes) don't really work well.  The recommended steps are to shut down the vm, remove any snapshots, then upgrade Fusion, then upgrade the guest tools (open tools for Linux, VMWare tools for Win/Mac) and virtual hardware.
