vmotion from vds to standard switch

Hello peeps

I have a datacentre called DC. It has one cluster of 10 esxi hosting VMs running on 2xVDS switches. Both VDS switches are configured using 2xlags. Each lag has 2x uplinks.

In the same datacenter I have a single node called standalone esxi.

I need to vmotion a VM from cluster to the standalone esxi without any downtime.

What will be the best method to achieve above goal?

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

You will not be able to accomplish this as-is since it is not possible to live migrate a virtual machine from a vDS to a vSS. Your best choice here is probably to first migrate those VMs on the source side to a standard switch, then allowing you to perform the migration.

thanks for the response dephnissov.

To migrate the VM to VSS I'll need a uplink assigned to VSS creared for VSS. If both current uplinks are assigned to VDS, do I have to break the lag first or will it work without breaking the lag?

Yes, you will have to break the lag. You probably shouldn't be using one to begin with, so it will have the added benefit of making your design simpler.

Thanks dephnissov.

When you say break the lag, do you mean just reassignment of uplinks on that particular esx OR on break lag on physical switch as well?

The answer is "yes" to all. Break the LAG on the vDS side, break the LAG on the switch side, and reassign one of the redundant vmnic uplinks to a dedicated vSS.
