vCenter HA and vSphere Replication

Hi,

Anyone tried vCenter HA together with vSphere Replication?

The plan is to place vCenter Active Node on Main Site, Witness on DR Site A, vCenter Passive Node on DR Site B and vSphere Replication Appliance on DR Site B. If Main Site fails, we fail over vCenter to Site B and recover all VMs with vSphere Replication on Site B as well.

Honestly this seems what un nessarialy complicated if you need vcenter ha , you probably should just have a vcenter in both locations. the problem I see with moving the nodes is you'd at the very least need layer 2 stretches as you couldn't re-ip them. Vcenter ha is temperamental as it is if you don't follow the directions, this just seems excessive, and only necessary if your trying to save money. If thats the case the time and effort is probably worth the vcenter license cost anyway.

When you say "all VMs" are you referring to the VCHA appliances or your other VMs?

FYI, the Witness Node must still reside within one of the two subnets e.g either Main or Site B so you will need to have stretched VLANs with site A.

Other than that, there is no issue with using vSphere replication to fail between sites managed by the same VC(HA)

The customer is trying to save money, yes, and they already have stretched layer 2 between all three sites. We have suggested to invest in a separate vCenter license, but would like to know if vCenter HA could be an alternative. Thanks.

By "all VMs" I mean the protected VMs they want to recover with vSphere Replication, not the vCenter HA appliances. They have stretched layer 2 between all three sites. Thanks.

Then yes, its pretty straightforward if you have stretched VLANs. You simply failover the VM in vSphere replication and power it up assuming the hosts on both sites have been configured with the same (d)vswitches

theres no need for a separate vCenter licence
