No, it's not freeware. And it's not "open source versions". Those are licenses required when reusing OSS components (as terms of the licensed software mandates).

The appliance I can integrate to my vSphere instance and work swell but I wish to use it as a standalone orchestration tool to play with. Is this possible?
You can use it any way you wish as long as you have an entitlement to use it. Once again, the open source licenses you're seeing aren't for the product as a whole but components which it uses.
