Can we start the VMware tools service in Bulk server remotely from PowerCli ?

Hi Everyone,

I have 150 + VM's showing as VMware tools service not running from RV Tools. Can we start the VMware tools service remotely for bulk server from Power Cli  from the list of VM's ?

Any pointer in this will be much appreciated.

thanks

You can try to start the VMware Tools process/service remotely.
But there are a few questions you will need to answer first:

  • Are all these VMs running the same Guest OS? If not, the required command and the method used will vary
  • Since VMware Tools are not running, you will need something else than Invoke-VMScript to start the process. Is that available?
    • Remote PowerShell?
    • SSH enabled?

LucD,

Are all these VMs running the same Guest OS? If not, the required command and the method used will vary - No, 2008/2012

Since VMware Tools are not running, you will need something else than Invoke-VMScript to start the process. Is that available?

Remote PowerShell?  - Not sure. need to validate.

SSH enabled? - Not sure. need to validate.

thanks

Just to make sure you understand, if the Guest OS on these VMs is isolated, there is no apparent way to start the VMware Tools.

In that case, an Update of the VMware Tools and a restart of the Guest OS could be the alternative.
