Error during vCenter upgrade 6.0 U3 to 6.5 U3

Hello,

I got this error when the wizard attempted to bring up the new vCenter server and start the services.

Encountered an internal error. see /var/log/firstboot/vmafd-firstboot.py_9665_stderr.log

I'm not sure where this log file is located. It's not on either of the ESXi hosts. Has anyone seen this before?

The file is stored in the vCenter Server Appliance, i.e. not on an ESXi host.

Hi Dan,

You should check the logs under the newly deployed vCenter Appliance. The VCSA will be running as a Virtual Machine. Just open the console and use ALT+F1 to login as root and you can check the logs under /var/log/firstboot.

Also you can download the log bundle by going to https://VCSAIP:5480

Since the failure is during firstboot, we cannot use the same VCSA. So we need to identify the issue before you initiate another upgrade.

Thanks for your answer. I retrieved the log files and found that it is an issue with my single signon user credentials. I do not currently have the correct credentials in order to change it. Is there a way to recover the old SSO Administrator@vsphere.local password? And is this process disruptive to production?

KB https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2146224 describes the steps to reset the password.

Please keep in mind that resetting the password may require updates to other applications, which use this account to connect to vCenter Server.

Hi Dan,

You can reset the SSO password by following the below VMware KB

VMware Knowledge Base

Once you have the password, login to vCenter using Web Client and change the password to a simple one and try to perform the upgrade again.

Changing SSO password is not disruptive.
