Old PC not available for uninstall, how do I use my vmware Workstation licence on another PC?

Has anyone encountered this problem and able to help?

- I no longer have access to a computer on which vwmware wokstation pro was installed and licensed (so to be clear, I cannot uninstalled vmware workstation from the old computer).

I'm then unable to licence vmware workstation on the current/new computer. HELP! i.e.

How then, can I licence my vmware workstation on the new/current computer?

Hi,

While you are not allowed to use the license on more than 1 computer, AFAICT there is no logic in place to enforce that.

IOW the licensing depends on the premise of the user doing the correct thing and not abuse their license.

There is no reason that a valid license should not work on your new computer.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for replying. However..unless I am missing something, I am not abusing any usage, as per the screen shot taken from my vmware account login.

Hi,

From your original statement it is unclear to me if you have tried to register your license on the new computer OR if you are afraid it does not work.

If you tried and it did not work, is there an error message?

Is there also more details like what version of VMware Workstation you are trying to register a license for and if the version of your license matches the version of VMware Workstation that you are trying to register.

It might also be relevant to know your host OS (and version)

Hi,

Okay; thanks for your interest in helping. I'll take on-board aspects of your response and rephrase my scenario and question.

Background summary.

If I had only one vmware workstation pro 12 licence, and I used it successfully after installing vmware workstation pro 12 on a Windows 10 computer,

then - smashed that computer to bits/no longer have access to it (e.g. to uninstall vmware workstation) -  and bought another Windows 10 computer:

Is it possible/is there a way, to re-use the vmware licence on the second computer?...To 'free up' the license for reuse, without having access to the prior computer? If so, how?

(as my attempts thus far to re-licence vmware workstation pro 12 on the new WIN 10 PC, fails with a message falsely stating that 'The license key that you have entered is invalid')

Hi,

There is no "freeing up" phase as the license registration does not use online activation servers like they do with Microsoft Windows.

You don't need to be connected to the internet in order to register a license.

If you are getting "the license key is invalid" then there's either something wrong with the license or you are trying to use a license that was not for that version or platform.

Eg.VMware Workstation 12 licenses cannot be used to register VMware Workstation 14.

In the past Workstation Windows licenses were also different from Workstation Linux licenses, I'm not exactly sure until which version that was. I thought before 12, but forgot the details.

If there's something wrong with the license then only VMware support can help.

I don't work for VMware, so cannot help on that part.

BTW, if at all possible use copy & paste with license codes, so that you can rule out typo's.

Hi,

The best advice I can give then it to open a ticket via my.vmware.com as the forums are "community" forums, so no official help is expected to come via this channel.
