Problem after Windows Update

I am running a Windows 10 virtual machine in VMware Fusion Version 8.5.10 (7527438) on Mac Laptop.

After having run "Update and Restart" in Windows, the virtual machine is not responsive.  It seems that I get a login picture, but when I click on it no login box appears. The virtual machine seems completely unresponsive.

Shut down under "Virtual Machine" in VWware is greyed out and clicking the option key (in order to activate the shut down option) does not work.

I can suspend the Windows machine but when it is restores I have the same problem.

The Windows update may be to blame, but I cannot do rollback, because I cannot login to it!

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Hi,

You are not mentioning what version of macOS you are using, but is it possible that the following is your issue?

Keyboard and Mouse not working in VMWare Fusion guests

I'm using Mojave 10.14.6 (18G95)

I was able to access the VMware Fusion menu from the Windows screen.  When I did that the Virtual Machine menu showed the "Shut down" option not greyed out (which it had been when a tried to access the menu from within the Mac).

I shut Windows down and then it continued the update phase.  Apparently, the update had not finished last night and Windows was not able to restart itself to finish it.

Currently, Windows is doing "Personalized settings", but it seems to me that it is unresponsive again.

Can I start Windows from VMware in some kind of a safe/repair mode?

Hi,

How many vCPU's did you configure your VM with?

It should not have more CPU's as half of the physical core count of your hosts CPU.

As for triggering Windows repair.

Shut down windows hard 3x in a non standard way (Power Off from the Virtual Machine menu after holding down the option key) and windows should come back in repair mode on boot.

Fusion 8.5 isn't supported on Mojave - only Fusion 11 and higher are.  You might try upgrading and see if that helps (it if still doesn't work after trying Wila's suggetions)
