VMware Workstation Pro can't run on Windows

Hi Everyone,

Windows 10 has installed the new cumulative update - KB4524147 and KB4517211 but VMware Workstation (build 14.1.3-9474260 and I also tried the build 15.0.2-10952284) software can't start. The following message is displayed:

I dont't think that it's a good solution to just remove the Windows Update. Is there any other known fix for this issue?

Hi,

Any reason you're not testing with Workstation 15.5 instead of Workstation 15.0 ?

Download VMware Workstation Pro

Microsoft can blacklist any application they like...

Another thing you might try otherwise is to rename the vmware binary from vmware.exe into myvmware.exe or something.

Same issue here.

I am on 14.1.7. The updates from Microsoft were forced on me. Workstation was not useable. Clicking on the WMware note left me with only one option..... to uninstall Workstation Pro and install Workstation Player. Potentially hours of work, when I got work to do.

Two updates got installed October 10:

Security Update KB4521863, which I left in place

Update for Microsoft Windows KB4515384, which I uninstalled.

After a reboot, Workstation Pro now opens again and seems to be working.

However, in Installed Updates I cannot see that KB4515384 is uninstalled.

These updates from Microsoft are turning into an epic cluster ef.

So far I have lost a perfect (but older) mobile workstation with 3D modeling software by Autdesk, which lost its 3 monitor capability.

And today, in principle I lost Workstation Pro 14.X. For now I have regained functionality, so my immediate problem is solved.

However, at some point in the future this update will be forced on me, or some other update from Microsoft (new emojis, transparency), you know all these great features we need to do our work.

What surprises me about this ordeal is the lack of guidance from VMware about which versions of its products will run on the newest Windows boondoggle.

So I like to that from VMware.

Although blacklisted by MS, and not supported by VMware, you may unblock applications using MS's Compatibility Administrator. For how to use, and download it see e.g. Biohazard's reply at https://www.tenforums.com/virtualization/141820-vmware-workstation-pro-cant-run-windows-message-3.ht...

I'm running 14.1.7 and ran into the same issue except that the updates sent to my Windows 10 system were KB4517389, KB4521863, and KB890830.  When I uninstalled KB4517389 I was able to run VMware again.  I agree that having to uninstall updates is not the best solution, so hopefully someone at Microsoft or VMware can figure out what's going on.

Thank you everyone for your help.

The problem is fixed for the version 15 by upgrading to the latest version deployed.

@ VMware

I am using 14 latest version.

On behalf of all others users on this version can we ask for a courtesy upgrade?

Hi,

Glad to hear the latest version fixed it for you.

FWIW, there is a statement from VMware about this issue here:

Statement for Workstation 15.0 and earlier being blocked by Microsoft KBs

I suppose now is as good a time as any to switch to hyper-V, sadly I enjoyed my 14, and didn't feel need to upgrade. disappointing. It is what it is.  How much to go from 14 to 15?

So is 'spend 150 bucks to upgrade even if you dont need the features someones definition of 'solved'

Found a quick way round is to sign up it's free to download and use by double clicking the reg file and say yes to add it to the registry. The VREG file underneath the picture and restart PC sorted the NO.1 method https://www.tenforums.com/virtualization/141820-vmware-workstation-pro-cant-run-windows-message.html

moderator edit by @wila : ONE reply with the same content is sufficient thanks, moved the other duplicates to the bin.

I would bet against the courtesy, but I also have this problem and uninstalling Windows updates did not help either.
Not a good sign for someone just wanting to use what they paid for.

Hi,

That courtesy update actually _did_ come.

It is the 14.1.8 upgrade.
