I have a HP ProLiant DL380 G7 server running VMware ESXi 5.0.0 Build 474610 with BIOS HP System BIOS P67. The maximum supported version of ESXi for this hardware is VMware ESXi 6.0 U3 which I want to upgrade to. I want to upgrade to 5.5 first.

When I tried to boot from ISO VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-1746974-HP-5.72A.3-Jun2014.iso to try to upgrade to version 5.5 I run into an issue. The installer cannot locate an installation of ESXi on the SD card. It recognizes the VMFS with the datastore. It detects the SD card but says there isn't an ESXi installation on it.

Is there a way use the CLI to update to version 5.5 and then to version 6.0 U3 ? Or is there a way to fix my current ESXi installation so that it is detected by the ISO installer? I have tried multiple ISO's with different versions and they all fail to detect an ESXi installation.

Do you have a special reason for this 2-step upgrade?

I ran into similar issues with HPE hosts, where ESXi was installed on SD cards. From what I found out, there is (was) a known issue with such installations, and trying to upgrade using an ISO image through iLO. Maybe upgrading to the latest iLO version helps!? What I'd suggest is that you upgrade the host's firmware too, when you upgrade ESXi.

Anyway, upgrading ESXi from the command line is pretty easy, and evean a bit faster that from an ISO image, because it requires only a single reboot.

First of all, get the correct installation Offline Bundle (.zip file). For v6 make sure that you use the Pre Gen9 offline bundle to upgrade the G7 host.

With the correct bundle uploaded to a folder on a datastore, you may upgrade the host using the command (assuming you don't have any individual drivers/vibs installed).

esxcli software profile install -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/foldername/offline-bundle.zip -p <profilename> --ok-to-remove --dry-run

Note:--dry-run can be used to evaluate what's going to happen, without actually changing anything.

To find out the profile name required for the upgrade command run:

esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/foldername/offline-bundle.zip

In any case, make sure that you have a current backup of your VMs, in case something unexpected happens!

Thanks for the response.

My reason for upgrading to 5.5 first was because this website shows a supported ESXi upgrade path chart (see attached) and it says that going from 5.0 to 6.0.0 U3 isn't supported and I would need to upgrade to a version in between first, which I picked 5.5.

Yes, I am using iLO to upgrade ESXi. Currently this server doesn't have a support contract with HPE so I am unable to download new versions of iLO and the BIOS as a support contract is required to access those firmware files on HPE's website. If I can find the proper firmware update files I will certainly upgrade the firmware for both.

I was looking into offline bundles (.zip files) to perform an upgrade via CLI but I couldn't find an offline bundle that was a custom HPE image. My logic for looking for a custom HPE bundle comes from me having to download custom HPE ISO's for ESXi, so I thought the same was required for the offline bundles. You are correct, I will need the Pre-Gen9 versions of these HPE custom images.

Would you happen to know if I can use a VMware offline bundle or would I need a custom HPE offline bundle to perform the upgrade?

You are correct, it seems that upgrades from v5.0 to v6.0 are only supported up to v6.0 Update 2.

Although I think the it would work to directly upgrade to v6.0 U3 using the method I mentioned, you may go with a two-step upgrade.

The offline bundles are available at the same VMware download web site as the ISO images, if you do have permissions to  download the HPE customized ISO images, you should also be able to download the offline bundles.

This weekend I will perform the upgrade using HPE Custom Image for VMware ESXi 5.5.0 Update 3b Offline Bundle (VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-Update3-3568722-HPE-550.9.6.5.9-Dec2016-depot.zip) and if that fails I also downloaded the HPE Custom Image for VMware ESXi 5.5.0 Update 3b Install CD (VMware-ESXi-5.5.0-Update3-3568722-HPE-550.9.6.5.9-Dec2016.iso) which I can also try.

I will respond with the results of my attempt to upgrade. If the upgrade is successful I will then attempt to upgrade from 5.5.0 U3B to 6.0.0 U3.

Some additional notes:

• once you've successfully upgraded ESXi from the command line, enter "reboot" on the command line to reboot the host
• iLO v1.91 can be downloaded from https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_f9123498fddf4708aa86e3d138#tab-history without authentication. You can then extract the .bin (firmware) file using e.g. 7zip, and update iLO from its Web interface. Please note that ESXi (if installed on an SD/USB device) should be rebooted immediately after updating iLO

ESXi should "upgrade" over itself. Sounds like you have a CD-ROM mapping issue with the iLO instead.

It's typical procedure for me to update all firmware first, server's firmware, iLO, array firmware, nic firmware, hdd firmware.

I can tell you I have successfully used "VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-Update3-9313334-HPE-preGen9-600.9.8.5.4-Sep2018.iso" on a DL360 G7.

I have also used that same image on many G6 and G5 machines.

When using HPE installs of ESXi, the installs have always been flawless and problem-free for me.
