Storage Group Question - Template Storage

Apologies for creating another post on this.. i chose 'correct answer' on may last one which appears to not allow me any further posts there. ( which makes sense.. can i undo that ? ).

I am setting up a Storage Group solely for the purpose of replicating my appstacks - for a 'live' backup.

I marked the destination LUN as not attachable in the manager .

Yes.. i read the blog App Volumes: Storage Migration for AppStacks - VMware Blogs - which vmware support loves to think has All the answers to every question i have about this :smileysilly:  ( perhaps i missed it ).

I have Spread.. and Replicate AppStacks - Direct Storage Selection .

I pick my current LUN and the Destination backup - to replicate to - LUN.

My question is to "Template Storage" .  The wording to ME at least is not clear.  vmware documentation ( at least that i found ) wasnt clear enough for me.

Is this Where i want to Replicate the Template TO ?.. Thus i keep the original location intact And replicate them to the storage i choose ?

this isnt now putting my Templates in a  New location right ?

thanks .

You can upload new templates from within the appvolumes manager if you wish to do so.

If you do have a template you created and manually altered for as far as I know you need to manually back those up because they are static.

If you choose to create a storage group for syncing Appstacks, it will only do that, sync the appstacks, not the templates.

Thanks @Ray_handels

I appreciate your help .

Sounds like that option is kinda Moot ?.. as i can just copy them quick if things get 'bad'.

Only thing im not sure of is - does that option change my default save location for templates ?

Is it just me ?.. or is this not very clearly stated on the Storage Group Page ?.. Must be ME Smiley Happy haha.

Thanks Ray for all your help .. appreciate it .

Depends on how you look at it. The template disk basically is nothing more than just a VMDK with about 5 to 10 files on it which can easily be recreated. If you did not alter the appstack template you can very easily upload them again using the Configuration --> Storage --> Upload Preppackaged Volumes. You can choose different locations to upload the templates (writables and appstacks) and also you can choose the default storage location.

What your looking at here is the storage group. This is mostly used to synchronize appstacks between different storages. If you have multuiple datastores in the group you can select 1 of them as the default template location.

When creating an appstack you can choose a datastore or a storage group. To be honest I don't see much difference in it. If you choose a datastore that is a member of a storage group it will eventually be synced to the other datastore by itself.
